Details: Celia Dawson was born in Castlebar, County Mayo in 1799, but I don't know her maiden name. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1852. Martin Dawson was her husband.

Seeking: Burke family home
Details: Hi, I'm Bob Burke and I thought I would pass along a small head cracker of mine.
I'll be over next spring and of course researching my family. Bet you never heard that before. One thing I haven't been able to nail to the floor is my grandfather's home. We have him at Heathfield House, or Summer Hill House, or Castle Killala (the old Episcopal Palace), this last one is just dirt also I believe. Well, I'm checking with everyone, everywhere (not china yet) to see if they have a url or address of a friend or someone who isn't a friend that may be able to help or point in a direction. Oh, my family name was Bourke, however, when my grandfather had a sign painted for his tailor shop in Dunmore, Pa. the sign painter forgot the "o" and would you believe the name became Burke. My grandfather filed his declaration of intent in 1882 as Michael J. Bourke and filed his naturalization papers in 1884 as Michael J. Burke. Is this normal or do all of us Irish have something in our genes?

Seeking: Reaney family from Turlough, Castlebar
Details: I am trying to trace the whereabouts of three sisters of the Reaney family who emigrated to the USA, sometime before the Second World War. There names where Anne, Maggie and Marie. We are not sure which part of America they emigrated to, but there is a possibility it was California. We believe that Anne Reaney married someone by the name of Merchant, Maggie Reaney married someone by the name of Lane and Marie Reaney married someone by the name of Murray (who was from County Cork). We believe that Maggie had a Daughter, but don't know what her name was.
I am also trying to trace another sister and brother of the Reaney Family. The sister's name was Agnus and she would be around 86 years old today. She left Castlebar round about 1932 and moved to either Manchester or Liverpool in England. She married someone by the name of Skinner who we believe was either a fisherman or in the navy. The brother's name was Jim. He left Castlebar around 1918 and moved to the area of Coventry and Nuneaton in England.
I know it is a long shot since there is not a lot of information to go on, but if anyone has any information about what happened to the three sisters in America, the sister in Liverpool/Manchester or the brother in Coventry/Nuneaton I would be most appreciative. Any information will be of great help to the Reaney Family in Ireland and England.

My Dad says that the family name was refered to by the old men of the Widnes Irish community as Hession. Details: My grandmother, Margaret Grehan was born in Castlebar either in the late 1890's or early 1900's. She also mentioned living in a place called Snugboro (a nearby parish perhaps?}She emigrated to New York, probably in the early 1920's and upon marrying became Margaret Rich. She had at least two sisters, Annie and Mary Grehan. Annie lived in Castlebar and died in the mid 1980's (1987 perhaps?) Annie left an estate to my grandmother in her will (it was probably a small house, and perhaps some farmland.) My dad received correspondence regarding Annie's will from the local soliciting firm of Garavan & O'Connor during most of 1988. This is the extent of the info that I have. If anyone in Castlebar has any knowledge of this particular family, or of any Grehans in or around Castlebar I would be most grateful to hear of it!

Any hints during my search??? Right now it's mostly USA military records. It's ironic - My greatgrandfather served in the Marines as a "minority" sharpshooter shipped off to South Dakota. There's a lot to be said for those "Buffalo Soldiers".

Jane MacElwaine was born June 24, 1846 in Ballyalbud, parish of Ballyeaston, County Antrim.
Both emmigrated to new york separately where they met. they were married in april 1865, settled in pennsylvania where 11 of their 12 children were born.
I have not been able to find information about their family histories.

Details: My Father was Thomas McHale, born around 1900 and who came from a town called largan or Lardghan outside of Castlebar. He was one of 4 (?) brothers and one sister. My mother was Honor McNicholas (her mother was Maria McHale) and she was from Crimlin which is off the Pontoon road by the Ross Post Office. Details: My great grandfather Patrick Joseph Morris was born in Castlebar on 3 Sept 1837. His father was James Morris and his mother Catharine Kelly. Patrick married Bridget Manley who was born in Ireland in 1844, I'm not sure where. They were married in 1860 but I'm not sure where, perhaps in the United States. There first child was born in 1861 in Illinois.
If anyone can help me in my search for information about the Morris, Manley or Kelly families of the Castlebar area I would be forever greatful.

Kate was one of ten kids -her sister lived in Nenagh Tepperary and had a son who moved to texas), Jim and Kate had 14 kids - Annie - became Sister Etheldreda and moved to Texas, Ned, Jim, Dan, Kathleen, Norah Etheldreda, (she was in Nursing in the UK in 1948). Details: My grandparents, Patrick James Hopkins and Bridget Callahan, were born in Ballaghadereen about 1872 and 1878, respectively. They emigrated to NYC, Patrick in 1898 and Bridget in 1896. Bridget's family were farmers, with lots of children, and she was the eldest. Patrick's father was a blacksmith, as he was. Patrick's brother, Thomas, also emigrated to the states, but to Philadelphia, where he married a Kate (last name unknown), and worked as a tailor. Details: Wondering if anyone knows of this man. He apparently went to England, and then to USA settling in Hawk Run, Pennsylvania. He married a Mary Roe, not sure if she was from County Mayo area. Details: Martin was my GGfather. It is rumored that he was a cooper, although his marriage certificate says that he was a farmer. In 1909 he lived in Louisburgh, although my GM had postcards from Castebar that I was when I was a kid.
Martin married Katherine Frain Durkan (all spellings of both names) in 1868 in Low PArk, Swinford, Mayo. Kilbeagh if I recall correctly. They had a mess of kids. Margaret adn Kate emmigrated to the states, married and raised families. Kate (Mary Kate) corresponded with many Irish families/family members until WWII. She died in Massachusetts in 1959. Born about 1890-97, likely in Louisburgh.
Katherine may have been a National Teacher in her later years.
My impression from photographs is that Martin was dark and Katherine was very fair...and diminutive. There may be several sons' families still living in the area, and two daughters who did not emmigrate. On of the daughter has a son who was a travel agent. He would now be about 70. I think that his first name was Liam. In the 1950's he worked for Cook's Tours. I think that I met him once in the States when I was about 4 years old.
Some family names that my Mum and my GGM told me were related: Sullivan, Gallagher, Frain, Taafe, Loftus, Waldron, Daugherty, (Mc)Sweeney, McDermott, Murray, Hurley...but some of these could be from Ireland via Nova Scotia.
Kate's daughter's name was MaryAlice. Kate was about 5'4" tall and favored her mother's looks..the only one of the girls who were so.
One of Kate's relatives became US Secretary of Labor during President Roosevelt's administration; then later, Secretary of the US Treasury. So there was a long history of emmigration within that family...and several spellings of the last name as well.
Oh yeah...someone in the family was connected to the White Star Line...most ship passages are not recorded as a result in the National Archives.
Kate (in US) was fond of Waterford glass and Beleek and used to have travellers bring pieces with them to Boston, before WWII...and, mostly, religious people did the carrying.

Irene died in 1965 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Josie now lives in Seattle, America, with her daughter, Julie. Ann died from a heart attack in 1974 .

One daughter known; Mary Griffin born August 1842 who subsequently married a Patrick Kavanaugh from Co. Wexford. Purportedly Patrick Griffin owned a pub in Castlebar which was confiscated by the British in 1849. Family 'tales' say that he and his wife & daughter fled to America at that time.
