The Western Regional Fisheries Board

Lough Corrib
The lake was packed with anglers for the end of the season trout fishing, hundreds of boats taking to the water, particularly for the last day, September 30th. The quality of trout fishing was top-class, just as it has been throughout one of the best seasons in years. Weather conditions over the week were difficult, particularly over the last two days of the season. Torrential rain at times plus blustery winds hampered fishing.
Nevertheless, many excellent trout were caught. In the Oughterard area, 50 anglers landed 90 for 165.5 lb in 84 rod days, the heaviest of 8.5 lb to wet fly by Niall O'Neill from Blarney, Co. Cork. Owen Kelly from Burrisheen landed a 5-lb fish to win a local competition on Saturday where only 10 were caught for the day, all due to the stormy conditions.

On September 29th Shane Baker and Sean Lavery from Brisbane, Australia, who was staying at Donal Connolly's guest house, in the Glann area, landed 3 trout for 17.75 lb., their best weighing 14-lb 5-ozs. John Thomas, the Galway taxidermist will place the 14-lb specimen Ferox trout, caught by Shane Baker, on a special mount, and later it will be dispatch to Mr. Baker's home in Australia. Mr. Connolly also reports 3 trout for 5.75 lb to Mike Hennessy and Owen O'Raibhaigh from Kenmare; 2 for 3.5 lb to himself and 2 for 2.25 lb to Austrian visitors to his guest house.

Lough Mask
It seems the good trout fishing wasn't availed of over the last few weeks of the season. From recent reports trout angling on the lake merited a lot more attention from anglers. Too bad that so many choose to select other waters and ignore what was considered outstanding fishing. Even though the water levels were rising, there was plenty of action most of the time. Four anglers from Scotland - Brian Summerville, E. Coburn and two friends had 14 trout for 18 lb to wet fly for just one day. Daragh Touhey from Dublin landed 12 for 16 lb in five outings, all to fly. And for 48 angling days, 33 anglers landed 61 trout for 82 lb.

Lough Carra
Only 12 anglers fished the lake and they reported a catch of 8 trout for 11 lb in 10 days. Strong winds hampered fishing somewhat. 8 anglers staying at Peter Roberts'guesthouse had 4 for 7 lb and returned 6.

Bunowen And Carrowniskey
A lady angler landed 2 salmon and two sea trout at Carr's Pool on September 28th. Both salmon were female and the lady very sportingly returned all fish to the river. That was at the Bunowen River where a second angler, on the same day, also landed 2 other salmon. The above two rivers received extremely heavy flooding during the last week of the season, so there were many days when no fishing took place. However, anglers fishing the Bunowen River were very happy with the number of salmon seen and many of them look forward to even better salmon angling in the years ahead. The staff of the Western Regional Fisheries Board and the person who issues the licences and permits, Mr. Charles Gaffney, Louisburgh, wish to thank all the anglers and landowners who co-operated with them throughout the season, making it one of the best so far.

Lough Inagh Fishery
Owing to massive flood conditions and stormy weather, salmon and trout angling over the last week of the season became next to impossible. However, 21 trout were caught by a small number of anglers, including 3 from the Trout Pool by Keith Hawton from England. Diarmuid Connolly from Ballinrobe also had a few trout, best 2.25 lb. Colin Folan, manager at the fishery, extends his thanks to all the anglers who visited the fishery during the season.

Sea Angling
This coming weekend a big number of anglers will compete in a shore competition at Westport, organized by Vinny Keogh from the Helm Restaurant in Westport, telephone: 098 26194. At least 110 overseas anglers will take part as well as anglers from all over Ireland.

Owing to stormy weather with torrential rain, deep sea angling was greatly hampered for most of the week, resulting in very few reports from boat operators.
