Div 4 Mitchels 0-7 : Ballinrobe 1-8 Sat 8 Jun

Mitchels lost to a more positive Ballinrobe team in this Div 4 clash in McHale Park on Sat last. Mitchels showed early promise with a point from David Quinn after two mins but thereafter scores were slow to come. It was a Ballinrobe goal in the 16 min which put some daylight between the teams. Chances were squandered by both sides and indeed it was the Mitchels who gave away hard won possession on a regular basis. At half time Ballinrobe lead by 1-3 to 0-4. Early in the second half Ballinrobe were awarded a penalty but luckily for Mitchels the ball was put over the bar. Ballinrobe threatened to pull away but some resolute defending by Mark Moore in goal, John McSharry at full back and Noel Kearney at centre back, while Brian Regan and David Quinn put in good work at midfield. Ian Walsh and Ger Noone had some good moments up front. With time running out and that elusive goal between the teams, Mitchels concentrated on trying to score a goal when points were for the taking. Ballinrobe weathered the storm in the last ten minutes and clinched the game with a 14 metre free on the stroke of full time to run out winners by 1-8 to 0-points

Mark Moore, Owen Kane, John McSharry, Kevin Mullaghy, Colman Keane, Noel Kearney, Eugene Ivers, Brian Regan, David Quinn, Brian McLoughlin, Stephen Murphy, Ian Walsh, Keith Gillick, Ger None, Neil Lydon. Sub Stephen Burke for Owen Kane, Declan Ginty for Keith Gillick

Classic Golf

The golf classic was a resounding success and once again sincere thanks must go the organiser in chief Auld Stock Mick Byrne. With over 40 team taking part, the competition was always crisp. There were many fine rounds played and indeed if the football could match the skill of the golfers, then a lot of problems would be solved. After a most exciting tussle the winning team 91 points consisted of Gerry Lynskey, Peter Lynskey, Tony Keady amd Brendan Lynskey, all well known members of a very successful county of late. Second on 89 points was the John O Sullivan team with members Sean O Sullivan, Gerry and Robin Daly; as well as the free putting John himself. Paddy Burke's team came third on 87 points whilst James Rocke's team also had the same number of points but had to settle form 4th place. Mick Byrnes team finished well on 85 points. The competition was most kindly sponsored by Heineken, to whom we are most grateful. Well done to all and bookings are now being taken for Classic 2003

Connaught Semi Final Mayo v Galway

Unfortunately the result did not go the right way but there was a tremendous response to the organization of the game. Sincere thanks to all the supported who turned out to make the occasion a colourful and exciting one. To all the stewards, workers and helpers, particularly those from other clubs our sincere thanks on a job well done. A tremendous team work ensured that the event was managed well. As we go to print we hope to see an equal, if not better response, to more of the big games which could come the way of McHale Park in the not too distant future.

U21s

The U21s are currently in training under the skilled eye of Martin Carney in preparation for the Championship game v Kiltane scheduled for Jun 19th. This is a most important competition, not only for the players, but also from a club point of view, as we try to re-establish the clubs position as a football power.

Seniors

After the break in the league the senior team have engaged in a number of challenge games. Whilst the results are always important there is no replacing the competitive edge of league or championship. With the dangers of the team going flat it is important that focus, tempo and determination are all brought back to a keen level. The game against Bonniconlon next week will be most important for the club, as it will set the tone for the championship in a couple of weeks as well as an important placing in the league.

Dates for June

16/06/02 Div 2A Away v Bonniconlon
16/06/02 Div 4 Home v Ballintubber
19/06/02 U21 Championship Home v Kiltane
22/06/02 All Ireland Qualifier Draw next Sunday
30/06/02 Connaught Final Galway v Sligo
