Feile na n’Gael

Castlebar U-14 hurlers, many of them playing in their first ever hurling match, did themselves and their club proud in the Feile na n’Gael tournament held in Castlebar on Easter Monday.

Castlebar 1-5 ; Ballyhaunis 2-3

In the first game they played against Ballyhaunis and were leading by 1-2 to 1-0 at half-time with a goal from full-forward Brendan Raftery and two points from team captain Gary Hayes. Ballyhaunis came out strong in the 2nd half with the breeze behind them and had a point early on from a free. Some wonderful defending though by Mathew Armstrong in goal and by Patrick Fitzgerald, KieranMoran, Raymond O’Malley, Mathew Dempsey and Lee Tuffy in defence kept them at bay. The skillful Gerard O’Boyle in midfield and Daniel Collins at center back were controlling the game and 2 more points from Gary Hayes put Castlebar in the driving seat entering the last 5 minutes.

Ballyhaunis hit though with a 1-1 in the space of a minute to put them a point up with just a couple of minutes to go. Good work by Aaron Donnelly, Alan Killeen and Cathal McHale helped to set up Gary Hayes for the equalizer with a minute to go. Ballyhaunis countered however and came straight down to score what proved to be the winning point. It was a heart-breaking loss for the Mitchels lads who gave their all ‘till the final whistle, but at least they could be proud of the way they had played. Ballyhaunis deserved their victory though for hanging in there for long periods of the game when it looked like Mitchels were in control and then taking their scores when it mattered most.

Castlebar Mitchels 4-3 ; Ballyheane 2-1

In the next game the Mitchels lads were determined to make up for the previous game and win themselves a place in the semi-final. However they got off to the worst possible start with Ballyheane scoring two early goals. Nevertheless they soon settled down with Gary Hayes scoring 1-1 without reply to leave the half-time score at 2-0 to 1-1.

Managers Daren Greaney and Steve McKeogh were unperturbed at half-time realizing that their team had the wind behind them in the 2nd half. They urged their players to be patient and that the scores would come. Sure enough they did. Conor Hayes opened the scoring in the 2nd half with a goal that the great D.J. Carey would be proud of. Cathal McHale followed this up with 2 well taken goals to leave the Mitchels in command. Ballyheane hit back with a good point, but this time Mitchels pressed home their advantage with two more points from Daniel Collins and Gary Hayes after good work from guys like Alan Garry, Kieran Hughes, Keith Lavelle, Michael Reid and Kevin O’Boyle. Ballyheane never gave up and made Mitchels fight hard all the way and they can take great heart from the way they played.

Semi-final versus Tooreen

Next game up was the semi-final against Tooreen. The Mitchels lads were at a disadvantage from the beginning haven’t just played two games while Tooreen were fresh, having had a walk-over from Westport and Ballina, both of whom failed to turn up. Nevertheless let that not take from Tooreen’s victory. They were the class team of this tournament and I’ve no doubt will make a big impression at the national stage of this competition. They beat the Mitchels lads by 5-9 to no score and went on to beat Ballyhaunis in the final by 9-5 to 0-3. We wish them all the best in the All-Ireland feile.

The Mitchels lads, who finished off their evening in Supermacs, seemed to enjoy what for many of them was their first taste of competitive hurling. They are back in training for the championship this week and we wish them well in the future. On the club’s behalf I would like to express our thanks to Darren Greaney, Steve McKeogh, Daithi Hughes and Tony Stakelum for all their great work with the team, to Mike Armstrong and Gerry Lane for their help in lining out the pithches and to all the club members, parents and family members who came along to support the team.

Genfit Cup Senior Hurling

Castlebar Mitchels 1-0 ; Ballina 2-7

Castlebar Mitchels got off to a disappointing start to their Genfit cup campaign in McHale Park on Easter Saturday. Playing with a strong breeze in their backs, Ballina got off to a good start and led by 1-4 to no score at half time. Castlebar started the 2nd half well, but just couldn’t seem to hit the target. Eventually Owen Shaughnessy got them on the board in the 12th minute with a wonderfully taken goal. Ballina hit back shortly after with a goal of their own and eventually ran out easy winners. The Mitchels lads tried hard throughout the game, but were let down by the quality of their stickwork. Nevertheless with the longer evenings now it is hoped that this area of their game will improve before they take on Tooreen in two weeks time.

Thanks to all our loyal supporters who turned out in miserable weather conditions for the game, to Kevin Kelly and Mick Connolly for umpiring and to those who prepared McHale Park for the game.

On Wednesday last Oran failed to show for their Connaught League game against Mitchels. Mitchels now go on to the 2nd round of the competition. On Saturday evening Mitchels had a good workout in Tremane against the local side.
