Comhairle Pheil.

The past week saw an industrious workshop being undertaken by the U16 players. This culminated on Friday night in the Welcome Inn Hotel when Eugene Lavin, the County Coaching Games Development Officer, and Joe McCabe conducted a very productive brain storming session for managers, coaches and indeed any one interested in football. The next stage will be practical on the field on Monday 15th April. Anyone interested is invited to attend and particularly those who have expressed a wish to become involved in any aspect of the game. The purpose of these work-ins is to coach the coaches, through developing coaching skills and thus developing the available talent in order to better bridge the gaps between various stages of football. Hopefully, the end product will be a comprehensive plan to enable a continuation of development of players and teams from under age right through to adult football.

Kilmaine 0-11: Castlebar Mitchels 0-11

The Mitchels made the journey to Kilmaine to play their inaugural game in Div 2A on Sunday last. Expecting nothing easy, the Mitchels were under no illusion as to the task facing them or indeed of the difficulty this particular division poses.

Right from the throw-in Kilmaine attacked and only for the alertness of Ciaran Naughton the ball could have been in the back of the net. It was Mitchel's Paul Jordan however, who opened the scoring with a fine point. Kilmaine came back with points from Brian Maloney. Scores were being traded, with Filan, Jamie Fitzmaurice and Dwayne Flynn scoring for Mitchels.

In the 17th minute David Loughlin suffered a freak accident and the game was held up for a time. Mitchels took advantage and ended the half leading by 0-7 to 0-5. Centre field was the key area and a great duel was taking place between Shane Fitzmaurice and David Loughlin until his injury. Dara Larkin was giving nothing away to the pacy Brian Maloney. Up front Kevin Malone was having a great tussle with Pat Kelly

In the second half it was Kilmaine who were making the least number of mistakes and after going into a two point lead 10 pts to 8 with ten minutes left it was looking good for the home side. However Diarmuid Byrne (2) and Kevin Malone got the Mitchel's nose in front. In a proverbial nail biting finish, Kilmaine scored with 2 minutes left and indeed came looking for the winner but the defence was resolute. Mitchels for their part played some fine football against a team that had pace and vision, underlining once again the closeness in standards between Divs 1 and 2.

Both teams fielded some younger players and it was a credit to all how they adapted to the game at a higher level. The game was honestly competitive and entertaining all through. In the end both teams were satisfied with a draw and certainly Div 2A can look forward to some interesting clashes.
