Comments: Don't know if it's still there..in the Mall opposite the Convent/Hanley's shop (at the top of the steps)there is/was a lock attached to a stone pillar. I put that there in the early 1980's waiting for the girls to emerge at 4pm... so that's another bit of useless info for you.
Love to all my 'mates' in C/bar (Kevin Egan and Tommy Gilboy) from Brendan Colton in Colchester. Oh yes, I DID marry Suzanne Connolly (eventually). We're expecting our first child in November.

Comments: Hi to all who know me. Not long before I return to my own home of Castlebar. Hi also to those who I take too long to call to say hello. Just got back in from my late night swim a bit cold but I got used to it after 2 mins. I had a nice day off today back to work tomorrow for a long week-end of work I will perhaps just sleep at work since half an hours sleep sems hardly worth it to come home. I will say goodnight to all its 9.50pm my time here which would make it 2.50am Irish time. I am off to chat online to a close friend of mine. He needs his sleep. Isn't technology great hope to chat with my own friends and family in Ireland soon. C U later.

Comments: Hello to all the great Castlebar folk. I have my sister Breege Redmond and her husband Vinny visiting with me from Castlebar here in Canada. It is their very first visit to North America. We took them to Washington D.C. and to Ottawa Ontario. Also to Niagara Falls, Ontario where believe it or not we met our oldest sister Teresa just walking down the street. Any of you who have been to Niagara Falls Canada will know that they get literally millions of people every year so to just bump into one of your family members on the street when you had not seen them for nine years and did not have a clue that they were even visiting Canada is nothing short of amazing. I would like anyone reading this message who may know me to respond.

Regards,

Bernard Halligan

Comments: Want to say hi, plus would like some information on the William Monaghan on the list/ scrolled down the rosterand could not find any information pertaining to him. would like to know if there is a connection to the Monaghans (Moneghans) in Ohio. All that I know is my great great grandfather was born in Ireland in 1815. Came to America and married in 1839. Probably came with his family. Can not find what port or when he or they leaft Ireland. Tracing family roots and got no further than Terrence Manahan (American spelling when he entered) Changed to Moneghan few years later. May have been Monaghan but sloppy on spelling here in the 1800's. Tried to E_mail but browser could not located page, so doing it this way. If any information please notify me. Since could not find info wondering if William could be a family member?

Comments: Has anyone checked out the site for searching for Extra Terrestial Activity - it's pretty neat actually - there have already been over 1600 years worth of research done because of internet interaction. Here's the address for anyone interested. http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu

SETI@home actually consists of two parts: an "application" and a "screensaver". The application does all the work: it downloads blocks of data from through the Internet, performs the number crunching on that data (looking for orderly patterns that might be artificial), returns the results, and gets another block of data. The application is represented by a green radio telescope icon in the System Tray (normally at the lower right of your screen). You can open the application window by double-clicking on this icon.

The screensaver program runs when you haven't used your key-board or mouse for a while. It displays color pictures showing the data analysis process. Normally the application processes data only when the screensaver is running. Optionally, you can have the application process data all the time.

[Heard about this one Vincent but never actually looked at it before - we'll put it up on the main page for a while to see what people think. Maybe we'll get a few more rocket scientists out of Castlebar yet! (apart from Louis Brennan that is, the original torpedo man from Castlebar!)]

This is their very first trip to North America. We have now taken them to Toronto's CN Tower. Next will be Niagara Falls, then onto the States to visit Pittsburgh & Washington. It is great having them visit with me as they are the first visitors from my family to visit with me in my 27 years here in Canada (apart from 2 visits from my parents Delia & Jim in 1974 and 1978. Anyone who knows Breege & Vinny could post a message and I will see that they get it. Hello to all my friends and relatives in Castlebar and I hope to see you all in 2000.

Cecil Day Lewis, the former Poet Laurate and father of Daniel Day Lewis is listed in many bit biographies as having being born in Ballintubber House, Co Mayo. Is this the large house surrounded by trees on the right hand side of the road as one is travelling between Ballintubber and Partry or is it merely a mistake which should read Ballintubber, Co Roscommon?

Comments: Please could you send the population figure of Castlebar both urban and rural from the last census. Although I am a citizan of Castlebar I am unaware of this figure and wish to find out this information

[Hi Mairead,
After extensive! research we found the following:
In the 1996 Census Castlebar Urban had a population of 6585 and Castlebar Rural had a population of 3420. Within a ~10 mile radius the population was 18700 and within a 20 mile radius it was ~83000 - this latter includes Swinford, Ballinrobe, Claremorris and Westport but not Ballina. We also came across a survey figure for regular commuters, shoppers and visitors to Castlebar suggesting that Castlebar's effective catchment is about 150,000. We are far enough from Galway and Sligo not to be sucked into their catchments and thus, Castlebar acts as a centre of gravity for quite a wide area. Certainly the shops are buzzing at present and there is an extraordinary anount of housebuilding going on so that the 1996 figures probably underestimate the current situation by quite a bit.]

I would love to hear from anyone with Castlebar roots living in Canada or the U.S.A. I received some nice e-mails from Maureen Verdon Butt who lives in Los Gabos, California and who has family roots in Castlebar. Maureen is trying to track down some information on an Iggie Kelly. Apparently he was born in Castlebar circa 1912 and was the son of the Kelly's who had a drapers shop on Bridge Street in Castlebar. Can anyone out there help in tracing this gentleman ??

Comments: To Roger D. Gibbens re. your search for De Burghs (motto: "A Cruce Salus")
Burke's Irish Family Records (from p.338) gives very detailed backgrounds of the De Burgh's various branches in detail almost to the present day. My connection appears in "Hussey de Burgh" section p.343 half way down RHS "Anne, b.2 June 1814 ...and died 1902 leaving issue" Anne& Thomas's daughter Alicia Nina Reardon migrated to Australia. She was my great-grandmother.
I am also tooking at Castlebar for my Tonra ancestors. Great-grandmother Julia Tonra married John Cox, of the 39th. Dorset Regiment of Foot around 1820, and came to New South Wales, Australia about 1822-1828. I know that Tonra is a common Mayo name. I will be touring through Castlebar en route to Westport from Donegal early in October 99 following Australia's Rugby Union team in the World Cup. Would love to hear from any Tonra's out there, or anyone else who could help to place my Julia's family.
