Welcome to a new season of Sailing

A special meeting of Mayo Sailing Club was held in Dalys Hotel Castlebar on the 17 February last. The purpose of the meeting was to consider and decide the future development of the Club. A large attendance was present and there was unanimous support for the proposal put forward by the committee for the development of the club. Another special meeting will be convened when the plans are finalised and when it is known what grant aid will be available to the club.

A Safety awareness course will be run by the ISA in the Clubhouse on Saturday the 22nd of March, please contact Angus Burke for further details at 094 25404. Skippers please note that a representative from each racing boat must attend as per the Sailing Instructions.

The Boats will be launched on Saturday 29th March and Friday the 4th of April. A Time Sheet has been drawn up for the launch with 20 minutes allocated for each boat. To avoid unnecessary delays, skippers must ensure their boat is on station at the appointed time with all the standing rigging ready for mast stepping [don’t forget to have your shroud turn-buckles well greased in advance] otherwise your boat will go to the back of the queue. Skippers are also reminded to check their moorings before launching.

The Launching Supper will take place in the Atlantic Coast Hotel on Saturday the 5th of April at 8.00pm. Tickets are available from David Baird at 087 2362124. Michelle Rowley and Jarlath Cunnnane will each give a short visual presentation on their respective wilderness voyages to the Arctic and the Antarctic. The Atlantic Coast is offering discount B & B price of €89 per person sharing. All members are invited to attend what promises to be a most interesting and enjoyable night.

On the 15th of April next at 6 pm, a Race briefing will take place in the ClubHouse on the 2003 Club Racing Programme as per the Sailing Instructions. This briefing will be followed at 6.30pm by cruising information and the Clubs new Web site will be launched in the Towers bar at 8.00pm. Skippers should apply to the Sailing Secretary for Race Entry forms prior to the briefing. Keel boat race packs [new course cards, and 2003 Sailing Instructions], will be given to signed up Keelboat Race Entrants who have paid the season race Entry Fee of €150. There are 43 Keelboat races this season and a new feature of Sunday races will be held at 16:00hrs, after Sunday dingy racing at 12 noon. See the 2003 Programme of events for full details of all Racing, Junior Courses, Cruising, Introductory, and social events.

There will be an introductory sailing course for both cruiser and dinghy’s commencing on the 29th of April for five weeks, for further details please contact Angus Burke at 094 25404.

Kevin Rowley has kindly fitted coded locks to the Toilets in the clubhouse. Please leave the Toilets clean and kindly and close the doors after you.

" A Club development fund raising night is being planned for Sat 21st June and this promises to be no ordinary night!! A Black-tie Mid-Summer Nights Ball, with excellent food accompanied by a variety of music from dusk to dawn, with breakfast served as the summer solstice sun rises over Clew Bay. Weather permitting! Watching the sunrise up over the Clew bay archipelago should be a memorable spectacle. Come by land or sea - please make a note in your diary for this special night (exclusively for members and their guests). Members support is essential to help raise the necessary funds to realise our Development Plan. Enquiries and bookings to the Commodore, or the Treasurer.

Galway Bay 2003 (incorporating WIORA and NORA) will be launched on the L.E. Emer on Saturday 22nd March at 15:00 in Galway Docks. All interested parties are invited to attend.

A clean up of the ClubHouse and grounds will take place on Saturday the 12th of April, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Membership is now due, please send to Seamus Sammon at 35 Gladesville Castlebar.
