Remember when margadh more was held, around
June 24th I think, and the town was awash,
literally, in cattle and their byproducts.
Big wooden slats were put up outside of the shops
to give some protection. In the pig market, the
noise was terrible with the bonhams (or piglets
if you prefer)squealing in the horse carts and
ass carts. Everywhere, farmers bargaining by
stretching out their right hand to the
negotiating partner and spitting on their hand.
If you gripped a hand on which a man had spat
the deal was done. And the smell of the dung
from market square down to the pig market was
something else. It took days for the streets to
be washed down - everyone prayed for rain. When
it came the gutters ran thick, soupy and
and odorous.
