Western Region Angling Report February 19th. 2001

Hundreds of anglers went trout fishing on the first day of the season (February 15th) some of the parking and mooring areas having hardly any more space for the number of visitors and locals to the lake. Anglers came from most counties as well as from the North of Ireland. Conditions for fishing on the day were pretty hopeless with flat calm waters over most of the time. However, some outstanding catches were recorded in several areas including 160 trout taken in the Oughterard area for 248 lb. Fishermen trolling either brickeen or spoon baits caught most of the trout.
Three specimen trout - all over 10 lb - were caught on the first day, the heaviest of 11 lb by Darreen Higgins from Oughterard. Dave Walsh from Furbo landed another specimen of almost 10.5 lb and yet another was taken in the Cong area.
Seamus Kelly and his son Michael, Oughterard, enjoyed excellent fly-fishing when they landed 6 and put back five others. Cyril Conlon from Galway landed two trout to fly while John Butler and his son Frank from Rosscahill landed 3 nice trout, best 3lb.
Another good return was by John O'Halloran, also from Rosscahill, who landed 4 trout, best 4 '5 lb. Dave Walsh and D. Hanley, fishing on Lower Lough Corrib, they landed 7 trout, 3 of which averaged 3.5 lb and the heaviest weighing almost 10 lb.
Overall, over the few first days of the season on Lough Corrib, at least several hundred trout were landed. Some of the anglers reported that they returned quite a few trout that were in poor condition after the winter months.

Lough Mask
Although there were some rumours of trout taken on the first day of the season, we haven't yet received any complete report on catches from the lake.
