Welcome to our 4th Green Schools Newsletter.

Our next Action Day will be on Friday 22nd of February.

Here in Scoil Naomh Aingeal we have been quietly working away towards achieving our 4th Green Flag. The theme of this year's flag is Water.

The Green Schools committee along with Mrs English and Michael have been holding regular meetings regarding our H2O consumption.
The Committee held a water audit in the school to see where we could conserve water and came up with some very interesting results. We discovered a few leaks in the school and thankfully Michael was able to fix these which resulted in considerable water saving for our school.

Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.

We have lots of precipitation here in Mayo!!!

We in Scoil Naomh Aingeal would like to extend a míle buiochas to Laura Heneghan from An Taisce who helped us with lots of workshops and information.

We held a Water Action Day last April to coincide with World Water Day.
The whole school, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, took part in the Action Day.
We heard lots of songs and poems and even had sign language about the theme of Water.
We also had a Water Wise Challenge where 2 teams went head to head to show their expertise. The winners of the Water Wise Challenge were the Water

Although about 70% of the earth's surface is covered in water, less than 1% is fresh water that we can actually use!

Water is made up of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen. Its chemical formula is H2O.
Each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to a single oxygen atom.
The existence of water is essential for life on Earth.
Roughly 70 per cent of an adult's body is made up of water.
At birth, water accounts for approximately 80 per cent of an infant's body weight

Water has three different states, liquid, solid and gas.

Our Winning Water Slogans
The best way to save water is one drop at a time.
Water, water everywhere, do not waste it leave some to spare.
Water, water everywhere, please save water if you care.
Save some water for the next generation, so they don't suffer dehydration.
Drink me, wash with me, clean with me but don't waste me.
Water is magic, without it life would be tragic.
Water gives life and its absence causes strife!

Tips for Saving Water at Home

" Don't fill the kettle
unless you're going to use it all.

" Use a full load in your dish washer
or washing machine.

" Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.

" Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you'll save up to 150 gallons per month.

" Put food colouring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

" Did you know that keeping the tap running when cleaning your teeth, wastes 6 litres of water a minute? And we all know we should clean our teeth for at least two minutes, so that's a lot of wasted water!
