GREEN SCHOOL NEWS

Be Green, Keep Clean, and Never Let Rubbish Be Seen

We had a Green Schools Energy slogan competition in our school.
Here are some of the winning slogans

Energy's Rare we need some to spare

Give a Rest to Mr. Socket, Extra Money in Your Pocket!

Turn off the lights as you say goodnight!

These are some of our new slogans and tell clearly
how we are more energy aware in Scoil Naomh Aingeal

The Seven Steps

Our School is in the process of working for our 2nd Green Flag. We are saving energy all around the school and our community. There are seven steps on the road to achieving Green Flag Energy status and we are all trying our best to complete them. The seven steps include:

1. Setting up a Green-Schools Committee
2. Environmental Review
3. Action Plan
4. Monitoring and Evaluating
5. Curriculum Work
6. Informing and involving
7. Green Code

We're not just doing this for our school; we're trying to make everyone aware of the world around us and to start saving energy everywhere they go.

First of all we are going to tell you all about Guzzler from the SEI. He is a little green monster who loves to save energy! The junior classes learned all about him this year.

Aisling Wheeler from An Taisce came to visit the school in November and helped us learn about the importance of saving energy. This was very interesting and set us off in the right direction on our path to our second Green Flag.

Third class went to visit the Civic Amenity Centre in Derrinumera in March and found out some really interesting information about Recycling and its link to energy. They can be seen having a fantastic time on their class page.

Fifth class took part in the K'nex wind energy project and were amazed at what they found out about wind energy. They also had a guest speaker in to talk to them about the whole concept of renewable energy sources. They think we could power all of Ireland with windmills in Mayo!!!
Who knows they could be correct.

Some simple ways to save energy that we use are:

Closing doors to keep the heat in
Pulling down blinds at the end of every day to conserve
heat and minimise heat loss
Switch off lights or any appliances when not in use
Make sure to turn off things completely and don't
leave them on standby
If you're too warm, turn down the heating
If you're too cold close the windows or put on a jumper

We are proud of our Green School Status and we are constantly endeavouring to become even greener!!

All is well when the
GREEN FLAG
is flying high!
