The 3rd and 4th Class Language Group tried their hand at baking recently. As part of their language work they had learned the names of kitchen appliances, utensils and equipment. They responded eagerly to the opportunity to make pastry and mince pies. This involved further language learning: ingredients, equipment and verbs associated with baking; weigh, add, cut, roll, rub, brush, grease. When the task was completed they gave oral accounts - using the new language - of the sequence involved. Subsequently they wrote the recipe, the method and their views on cooking. Here are some of their comments:
" I like cooking because it's fun. When I grow up I will know how to cook". - Viktorija- 3rd Class.

"My favourite thing is to cook a fried egg. I liked making the mince pies because I was cooking with my friends in the class. When we cut the pie shapes they looked like flowers". - Weronika - 4th Class.

" My favourite thing in making mince pies was filling the pies with mincemeat. I loved making them because I never knew how to make them before. We put icing sugar on top of the mince pies. The icing sugar makes them sweet and look nice". - Julia - 4th Class.

" My favourite is the part that we have to make the pastry and roll the pastry. I like feeling the flour and margarine with my fingers. I like to eat mince pies. I want to learn more about cooking so that I can cook like my mum. My mum is a very good cook". - Htoo Htoo - 4th Class
The mince pies were delicious!
