Rest in Peace

Lay Readers

Imagine you could have everything.  Where would you put it all?  For so many, chasing the dreams of happiness, security, and harmony seems to have to do with “getting more”.  Even the realm of the spiritual has lately been reduced to goods to be consumed.

There is a longing for spirituality or wisdom in all of us, but, even as we try to fill it, we find it difficult to make it an encounter with God.  The young man asks: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”  The ensuing dialogue tells us that even with all our efforts and virtues - even keeping all the commandments - the question doesn’t go away!

“He was shocked and went away grieving.”  Jesus had asked him to let go of the security of his possessions, all those things that gave him a feeling of being in control of himself and his world.  They are the riches that cause our grief because they kill our openness to God’s wisdom.  We have to let go of our “things”, the “true and tried”, the “safe and comfortable”.  We have to become vulnerable and receptive to the Word of God as “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”.  We have to allow the gift of that Word to become flesh in us - in our spirituality and our sexuality, and in our embrace of the paschal mystery- if we hope to “pass through.”

Now, imagine you could have “Everything”.  Where would you put it?

The rich suffer want and go hungry; those who fear the Lord lack nothing.
