August 15th is the ‘pattern’ day at
Tubber Mhuire, a holy well about 200 metres south of Rosserk Friary, on the west
bank of the river Moy. This lovely ceremony attracts young and old alike and is
a very spiritual experience. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Corcoran, a local
priest, followed by a ‘round’ of the traditional station by a local man.
One of the extraordinary sights at the well is a whitethorn
bush growing out of the roof of the well-house, with no clay to be seen there.
The tiny building covers the well and an inscription tell us it was built by
John Lynott in 1799 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It may however, have
been built in the 1600’s and rebuilt by Lynott.
