In the past few days, workmen digging a channel across the grounds of the Church of the Holy Rosary, unearthed part of the floor of the old church which served Castlebar for many years prior to the building of the present edifice, which was officially opened in 1901.
In the photo, the floor can be seen running between the stick in the foreground and the man in the background.
The man in the photo is Evan Connon of Dublin, whose company is presently engaged in the restoration and protection of the stained glass windows at the church. The Connon family have a long association with the ecclesiastical window business and Mr. Connon's grandfather worked for several years at the world famous Harry Clarke Studios in Dublin.
