It becomes more obvious daily that the world is a global village, where small seeds of generosity in one country can bear fruit in many others, where we must quickly learn to live as a trusting and respect-filled community. It is by following the lifestyle of Jesus that we can avoid such annihilation.

To bring news of that salvation to all peoples in every generation is the call of every follower of Jesus. The call to some is more specialised and focussed. It is a call to leave the native land to build the kingdom of Christ among peoples who have not heard of him. It is to leave one’s own people to bring the gospel to the ends of the earth. This vocation to the foreign missions has flourished among the sons and daughters of this island. On Mission Sunday, we salute the heroines and heroes who are enriching our missionary tradition and we support their heroism with our prayers and our finance.

What of the future? Our missionary tradition is changing. Dioceses are becoming more directly involved with people giving commitments of some years to the work

But the fact remains that the work of spreading the gospel will always need the dyed-in-the-wool missionary, the one who commits his or her whole working life to plant gospel seeds among those who have never heard of Jesus. The call to such a life is given to ordinary people who have extraordinary generosity.

distribution of communion at Sunday and weekday Masses, to the sick and housebound and in the hospitals. You are asked to suggest names of people you would recommend as Eucharistic Ministers.

Please send in the names to the Presbytery not later than 17th November.
