As a new user searching the archives I came across posting by UTP re what happened to Mr. Mellor's car which was commandeered in 1924. I am one of (Lewis Charles and Lavinia) Mellor's grandchildren. While I cannot answer the question what happened to the car I do remember my mother Edith, the oldest of the Mellors' five children, telling about it. Lewis and Lavinia had five children, Edith, Charles, Annie, Lewis and Benjamin and in 1925 or 1926 they left Castlebar and moved to Fordingbridge, England. There they opened another shop with a bakehouse. I understand that my grandparents had the first, or one of the first, cars in Castlebar. Only the youngest, Benjamin, is still living. He is in his late 80s.
