Lough Corrib
There was a severe and general drop in trout catches over the week, all due to the very cold and strong northerly winds which really hampered anglers from getting onto the lough. While there was brilliant fishing to wet fly through most of the previous week, anglers having around 600 trout to mainly duckfly hatches, the picture was very different lately. In the Greenfields to the Cornamona area 40 anglers landed 94 fish for 125 lb in 113 angling days, best 3.5 lb. Another factor, which militated against better fishing, was the fact that duckfly hatches were generally very poor resulting in far less trout coming to the surface. It has been observed by one angler fishing the Corrib for the past 35 years that the recent chironomid or duckfly hatches were the worst he experienced in all those years. It's expected that with milder weather forecast for the coming week, anglers should see hatches of Olives in the different bays and trout should soon start feeding to them.

Trolling and wet fly accounted for 69 trout taken in the Oughterard area by 58 anglers who fished over 76 days, a really big drop on previous weeks' returns. These fish weighed a total of 123 lb. Local angler Mike Faherty trolled for a day with P. Murtagh and he landed 6 for 12 lb. Another good catch was by Dennis Ward who had 6 for 9.5 lb to fly, and two Cork anglers - Philip Landry and Dick Willis - had 5 for 6.5 lb for a day. Two of the best flies over the week were the copper olive and bibbi0.

Lough Mask
While Lough Corrib fished poorly last week, Lough Mask provided excellent wet fly trout fishing, this for the second consecutive week. Most of the action was to just a handful of flies such as the Green Peter, the Bibio and the various Olive patterns. 56 anglers fished and they recorded 194 trout for 258 lb in 118 angling days, outstanding fishing by any standard. The really good news is that anglers observed lots of trout moving to fly-life whenever conditions were anyway suitable. Well-known angler from Claremorris, Bill Colohan and a friend landed 17 to wet fly for just a single day, and Martin Feerick, another champion angler, accounted for 10 for 12 lb in a single day. During 5 days with wet fly, Greg Donohoe from Dublin landed 32 trout for 35 lb. Both Sean Maloney and Mark Rogan each took a trout of 4.5 lb., and two Cork anglers had 9 for the same weight for a day. 24 anglers from the Dargle Club had 27 for 40 lb, and two Scottish anglers took 16 for 25 lb in 3 days to wet fly. During the same period of 3 days with fly, T. Quirke and S. McNulty from Dublin had 17 for 22 lb. 8 trout for 12 lb were caught by Belfast anglers S. Mason and R. Figgis. Ballinrobe anglers Ronan Cusack and Kieran Biggins landed 6 in just one evening's fishing with wet fly.

Lough Carra
Ronan Cusack and his friend also fished this lough for a few hours and they had 7 trout averaging 1 lb, and 10 anglers staying at the Roberts' Guesthouse in Partry had 4 for 7.5 lb for a day and they released 18 other trout. The reports are good from this lough where anglers are saying lots of trout are moving well, particularly trout around the 12 to 16 ozs. 18 anglers over 14 days landed 19 for 26.5 lb, best 3 lb. Best flies included the Olive patterns and duckfly patterns.
