History_of Castlebar

Eviction is when a person or family is thrown out of their home by a landlord.Eviction was a common occurrence in Ireland during the 19th century. Along with losing their home, often their possessions were burned with their house.

During the famine times people spent all their money on rent which ment they could not buy food.If you

ever walked along the west coast during the famine all you would see would be corpses or graves (not graves MASS GRAVES!!!).

The weaker they would get the less they would be able to pay rent and they were EVICTED.

Eviction back then was a very common thing.

Back then the meaning of eviction was being burnt out of their home or being shot and their house burned with them.

Hope you enjoy our project on AN GORTA MOR and enjoy the rest of the project.
