>> WHAT A YEAR THAT WAS!
******************************
JANUARY - the
snow that fell in late December 2000 was still very much on our minds in early January 2001. The Panto featured strongly also with lots of photos from Michael Donnelly who played a blinder right through the year it must be said.

FEBRUARY - The Mel Gibson premier photos and video featured along with Michelle Rowley's unique photos from Antarctica. Some of us took off to Australia for the month for a bit of warmth though!

MARCH - Foot and Mouth disease precautions dominated the news and impacted on our way of life big time in March even causing the cancellation of the Patrick's Day celebrations and virtually every social event in town. We did get some photos of the Patrick's Day celebrations in Manassas, Virginia though!

APRIL - The Town Development plan was on display on the site through the month. The Roads Action Committee protested about the state of the N5. We added an online video about the historic Wynne Collection of photographs to the Mayo Moments series of videos [this link needs realplayer]. The Mayo Concert Orchestra visited Hoechstadt.

MAY - The Market Square was 'demolished' and Michael Donnelly recorded the occasion for us on the day, McHale Park celebrated its 70th year with significant renovations and we recorded a video to celebrate their 70 years. The sailing club regularly updated their pages throughout the year and in May James Cahill recounted his epic Atlantic Honeymoon.

JUNE - The Blues Festival did go ahead and with extra gusto in order to make up for the lack of a Patrick's Day in March! We ran our own poll after the country voted against the Nice Treaty and St. Therese's relics came to Knock Basilica. The results of our visitor profile competition were published showing that most of our readers live in Castlebar and Mayo and almost 70% live in Ireland.

JULY - We posted details of lots of summer camps for kids during the summer holidays. The new sculpture appeared on the Market Square. We began a major photographic tour of small villages and towns around Mayo and the West starting in Keenagh and ending up with over 800 photographs. Castlebar enjoyed lots of summer events such as Band Concerts on the Mall.

AUGUST - The August Bank Holiday featured Turlough Annual Duck Race and Heritage Day - some 45 photos were posted on 5th August the actual day of the event so those who were there on the afternoon saw themselves on the web later that evening! The sailing club provided an ongoing account from the North West Passage voyagers. We featured the Belcarra bike race and a film-making course at the Linenhall.

SEPTEMBER - The tragic events of September 11th electrified our bulletin boards with messages of horror and sympathy in response to the terrible atrocities. Of course this overshadowed the official opening of the Museum of Country Life on 9th September. In September we also introduced a search facility to help people find photographs of people or places in the many hundreds of photographs in the Castlebar Photo Galleries which now contain something like 4500 photographs.

OCTOBER - A Ferris Wheel dominated the skyline of Castlebar for much of October and the Roolaboola kids arts festival lit up the town with fun and games. CRCFM extended its broadcasting times and of course CRC continues to webcast here on www.castlebar.ie. Castlebar Swimming Club kept us up to date right through the year and had many prestigious wins this year. Muirsin Durcan kept us up to date too right through the year with hundreds of photographs including these taken at the launch of Through Fagans Gates. Castlebar Parish Church celebrated 100 years on 7th October.

NOVEMBER - We kept track of Ireland's World Cup Iran Match in November - Japan here we come! We also introduced the Castlebar.News web pages. YOU can now contribute articles that include both text and photographs. The steady stream of guestbook contributors and those looking for Mayo Roots continued in November as they did right through the year.

DECEMBER - The Badminton Club was very active in early December. A continuing interest in old Castlebar was obvious on the Nostalgia Board and in the Old Photographs contributed to Castlebar.News. The airport bar was demolished. Of course Christmas parties were plentiful with lots of party photos.

We would like to thank all those who provided photographs during the year including: Michael Donnelly, Muirsin Durcan, Keith Heneghan, Ken Wright, Hugh McGinley, Joy Heverin, Sarah Burke, Michelle Rowley, Seamas Moneley, Adrian Keena, Roderick O'Connor, Frank Cawley, Brendan Gilmartin, Peter Jordan, Magnolia Mary, Murrisk, Tempus, Max, The Pioneer, The Wynne Collection, The National Library and many others who provided wonderful images that brought Castlebar and Mayo alive right through 2001. We estimate that well over 3000 individual photographs were published on the site during the year. We hope that these and many more will continue to take photos and to retrieve old historic shots in 2002. We hope to be able to continue with our boast of "new photographs every day from Castlebar" in 2002 so that it is indeed worth your while
setting your home page to www.castlebar.ie and visiting us on a daily basis.

We would also like to thank those organisation, clubs and societies who continued to provide material and update their web pages during the year. It's not always easy and it takes quite a bit of effort. We know, however, that it is much appreciated as shown by the 2000 visits paid to the site each and every day.

We would also like to thank all those who contributed to the Bulletin Boards, took part in our 166 different Polls throughout the year or entered our competitions. Continuing the counting game - in 2001 we had over 26,000 postings to the main Bulletin Board and almost 3000 on the Nostalgia Board!

>> THANK YOU FOR READING 5 MILLION PAGES
******************************
The biggest surprise was when in January 2001 our hits shot up to over one million per month and have consistently exceeded one million per month right through the year. At well over 400,000 pages per month WE HAVE SERVED UP MORE THAN 5 MILLION WEB PAGES IN 2001 to our readers from the main Castlebar web pages plus perhaps half as many again from our hosted sites. It's a lot of web traffic for a small town and no other town in the country, large or small, comes anywhere near this level of Internet traffic. The main Castlebar site gets over 2000 visits per day and over 60,000 visitors per month (of course many of these are the same people coming back on a regular basis). Half of you live in or around Castlebar and 70% in Ireland with the remainder mainly in the USA, UK and Europe. Once again thank you for visiting Castlebar.

While,
www.castlebar.ie is a non-profit community web site with a lot of voluntary effort, it does cost money to keep it going. We update the site 365 days a year and naturally it takes a considerable effort to gather material and edit and format it for publication - plus we have to pay for a permanent broadband connection to the Internet. If you want to put your message over to our 60,000+ monthly visitors on some of our 400,000+ monthly page impressions contact Ray McDonnell (094-24845) for rates and details of our various advertising packages.
