anois....sceal deacrach....agus broin....the summer of '49 was a sad , tragic tear filled summer two boys....brothers yet.... well known to us on the road....john and james tonra...from ballymacragh....were reported missing after taking a dip in the cross between church lake and islandeady lake....after much diving and searching mike guthrie...hero.....confirmed the worst......the brothers were found hand in hand on the bottom of the lake....these boys were just in their early teens....they had worked all day on the farm at home and decided to go for a dip....john and james were twins and they were regular turf sellers on mchale road...they'd come into town with their turf on donkey and cart...their brother frank was in my class at school and johnny and james were a class ahead....the school provided a guard of honour....and again ...yes it was a sad summer....i remember reading report of their death and the story to mrs heavey and i remember the emotion s that were stirred ....i played with these boys occassionally on their farm....one never realized at the time ....the courage... the strenght ....the ability of hero guthrie....he brought so many bodies from the lake...and lakes.....he indeed must have had remarkable mental fortitude to cope with his tasks....i was a friend of his although younger i soldiered with him at finner camp before i left ireland...i feel a plaque of some kind should be placed at the lake by the diving board in mike guthrie's honour...another death around that time was the rather sudden and tragic death of patsy twiggs. patsy went into the hospital to have his appendix removed complications sey in and sadly he died ..too soon too young...patsy lived on market square....he had a remarkable voice and sang all the solos at mass and benediction....again around the same time another young person died ...eileen mcloghlinn new line ...patsy mcloglinn sister...she was a young beautiful girl....i often played with her as she lived next door to my grandparents home on newline....when i think of patsy mcloghlinn ...i think of his "gang"....brendan salmon. fooie byrne, george conway[ he worked in molloys on the bridge], jimmy rowland....tylers shoes introduced a line of shoes at the time they were brown with a crepe wedge type heel....they were the rage for young guys at that time....and they traded under the brand name relyt...the boys were quite the dash at dances ...in the town hall....toreen ...seapoint...pontoon ...the gaiety...and belcarra ....in fact i remember meeting them at a dance in bundoran ...that was the year i was a 3star private in the f.c.a....i never went any higher however when i went to england they came looking for their uniform....back then fr. kearney said the fastest mass in town, fr gibbons preached fear fire and brimstone and mikey watson said and declared ...a pint , a package of woodbines and a box of matches that kills the bob chum....pat lavelle sued patsy egan [garda sgt.]or as we called him patsy fagan for letting his prize greyhound loose after the siochalonie raided a pub next door and went through lavelles back yard.....pat was a well known character ...saddler ...we often went in to his shop and watch him make harnass and listen to his loud gregorious voice and his many tales....he was a founding member of the castlebar boxing club and trainer his hackneyed coaching term was ..."stick out your left..."he and tom mchugh certainly fostered a great boxing stable....next door to him on castle lane was a shop...morans .....known to serve ice cream on waxed paper....a big scoop for a penny...across the street j.j. collins ran his emporioum....he was a well known flautist...but his shop window was often filled with dinky toys....rattigans pub was across from him and his weekly slogan....no cheques too big no cheques too small tons of cash to pay them all.... ...was often a banner on the connaught telegraph....just below him was george mcdermots pub....and then we continued up the lane to the cross of ellison street and main street where devers and bradys manned the corners....opposite j.b morans...and the irish house...stood guard.....that brings me to another nostalgic topic....but thats another time .....sin e mo sceal la inniu....amarach sceal eile ....slan agus ...tog go bog e...go deo...
