The Western Regional Fisheries Board

Lough Corrib
Once again the Olive hatches helped brown trout fishing and helped anglers to better catches in the past week. There were some outstanding catches to individual anglers in different parts of the lough, but mostly where the better hatches of Olives occurred. Lower Corrib was best for the larger hatches and a lot of trout were observed rising over the week, particularly around the "Narrows" part of the lough, which is close to Annaghdown. In the Oughterard area, where 68 anglers fished, 124 trout were caught for 187 lb in 90 rod days, best 4.5 lb by Mike Faherety who, along with James Kelly, landed 18 for 25 lb in 2 days.

75 anglers in the Greenfields area landed 139 trout for 143 lb in 83 angling days.

Lough Mask
Despite the cold northerly winds the lough continues to fish very well for the small number of anglers going there at weekends, mainly. The bluster and cold weather with heavy hail showers brought about good hatches of Olives and anglers observed some good rises of trout to the hatches in sheltered bays. Practically every trout taken were caught on wet fly, best patterns been Green Peter, Sooty Olive, Green Olive and various other tyings of the Olive pattern. 31 anglers fished over 52 days and they recorded 63 trout for 77 lb, best 3.5 lb. Two Sligo anglers fishing in Ballinachalla Bay, a noted place for the large Lake Olive, came away with 9 good trout for 12 lb, best 3.5 lb. Brian Healy from Dublin had 5 for a day; Paul Lausher had 4 and two Derry anglers 5. There are at present around 7 recommended access entry points open for anglers around the lake and anglers are asked to observe all disinfection precautions in place at the various entry points. A list of access points are given on the Board's website:www.wrfb.ie

Lough Carra
Reports from the lough say that a lot of smaller fish are coming to wet flies, providing lots of sport for the few anglers fishing. Duckfly and Olive patterns are taking most of the fish and for the week anglers kept only 9 for 12 lb. Mayfly hatches should take place by early next week provided weather conditions improve.

Galway Salmon Weir Fishery
12 spring salmon were caught for the week, all ranging between 9 and 15 lb. 6 of these were caught on fly while the rest came to spinners. Martin Kiely from Limerick landed the 15-pounder and David Loughlin from Northern Ireland had two for a day to fly for 17 lb. Don Keegan from Derry took a nice 12.5 lb to fly while Brian O'Rourke from Tuam landed a 14-pounder. Michael Leonard, the angler who landed the first salmon of the season in 2000, took two for 22 lb.

Moher Lake
According to Peter O'Reilly, the author of several angling books, this lough is heavily stocked with trout, he and two others landing over 50 for a half day recently, all but two of which were released again. Peter says the two beginners with him landed many fish which were stocked into the lough last year, all of which were in great condition. 14-year-old Brendan Ryan from Castlebar and his brother Jim from the USA landed 7 for a day and they lost several others.

The lough was restocked three weeks ago and is due for a further consignment of trout this week. There is only boat fishing available, no shore angling being allowed because of the foot and mouth precautions in place. Permits and boats are available from Michael McDonnell, Liscarney, Westport, telephone 098 21638.
