Westport have passed up their opportunity to have Europe's 7th tallest statue.
The tallest statue in Ireland or Britain and the tallest St. Patrick statue in the world.
The sculptor Timothy Schmalz has decided to look elsewhere for his statue. Why not Castlebar?
It would be a massive tourism boost. It would be amazing looking over our town. Something the townspeople can be proud of to show to the rest of the world. It would put Castlebar on the map.
We have plenty of spots for it. Old buildings could be knocked or it could be placed in the town park?
The council should be approaching Timothy Schmalz and convincing him to place his statue in our wonderful town.
What do we have to lose? Please support his idea and email either Timothy Schmalz or the Town Council and the councillors.
The original idea of the sculptor was to place the 100 ft tall bronze statue of St. Patrick on Croagh Patrick as a gift from the American people to the people of Ireland. The idea being to parallel the gift of the Statue of Liberty to the American people from the people of France. Timothy Schmalz already has a statue of St. Patrick in place at Knock Shrine.
