For those of us who welcomed in the New Year full of good intentions to quit smoking and get down to the gym, here is a resolution with some mileage – make a pledge to become a safer driver.

Mayo County Council's Road Safety officer is urging drivers and riders to raise driving standards and take more care on the roads this year.

Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer, said: "Driving is an everyday activity for thousands of people and one which is far too often taken for granted. If people took more pride in their driving skills then our roads would be safer for everyone as poor driving affects more than just the individual."

The advice comes as research shows that in 95% of collisions human error is a contributory factor and that drivers with experience of advanced driver training are 20% less likely to be involved in a crash.

Noel added: "The Road Safety together working Group strives to raise awareness of many road safety issues through a combination of education, training and publicity initiatives. A number of driver training programmes are available to assist motorists and motorcyclists develop their skills and I would urge all drivers to make a pledge to become a safer driver this year." Also he is asking all parents/guardians to consider other road users when picking up or dropping off at schools to park smart and not create a hazard.

•          Take further driver training
•         Ensure your car is legal and roadworthy
•          Plan ahead and leave 10 minutes early for each journey
•          Switch off your mobile phone while driving
•          Take regular breaks every two hours on long journeys
•          Drive according to weather conditions
•          Remember – a speed limit is a maximum and not a target
•          Park smart
