Be Prepared

Today’s liturgy and our reflections put before us two important themes:

(a) our life could end suddenly without prior warning and

(b) we should always be prepared and be ready to face that end.  These are very powerful themes that we cannot afford to take lightly or ignore.  There are a challenge to us to change our lives.

As we approach the end of this liturgical calendar year, the church reminds us just as Jesus reminded his disciples at the end of his own earthly life, that life on earth is but a brief preparation for an eternal life to come.  What would this mean in practice?

What it means is that we do not become so preoccupied with the cares of this world that we lose sight of the world to come.  If the coming of the Lord is a time when his kingdom will be finally established, then we should work now to establish that justice and peace which characterises his kingdom.  If the future will see the victory of the Lord over evil,  we must be involved here and now in the struggle against the forces of evil, especially those forces that oppress God’s poor.  If in the end love is all that abides, then we must live our lives in love here and now.  If in the end God will be all in all, then we must be sure to make space for him in our lives even now.  To do this is to be prepared.  It is a way of concretely giving expression to the prayer we say at Mass:

“Deliver us Lord, from every evil …. as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.
