The Western Regional Fisheries Board

Western Angling Report June 19th. 2001
by Danny Goldrick

Lough Corrib
With the mayfly hatches practically over trout fishing has been very quiet in the past week with just a few boats fishing mainly in the evening time. Some anglers have taken to trolling for salmon in the Oughterard and Cong areas in particular and there are reports of quite a few grilse caught in these areas. In the Cong area alone several hundred salmon have been caught over the past few weeks, mostly by anglers trolling and using other methods. On the first day of June one angler is reported to have 14 salmon to his own rod. Trout anglers in other areas of the lough have landed salmon to fly.

24 anglers in the Greenfields and Cornamona areas landed 55 trout for 88 lb in 34 angling days, best bag of 6 for 8 lb taken by the Reilly brothers, Robert, Richard and Basil from Loughrea. Inspector John O'Riordan from Tralee and Galway Garda Station caught a magnificent trout of 7 lb while fishing dry fly fishing at Lower Lough Corrib for an evening.

Lough Mask
There was good fishing to wet fly during the earlier part of the week when conditions were quite favourable. Later, as the weather changed to thunder and heavy rain, there was far less trout moving to the surface. All through the week, though, there were nice hatches of mayfly and some olives. On Wednesday Michael Dunne from Rochfordbridge had 7 good trout and rose and put back many others. His trout were all caught on Olive patterns, some of which proved successful for other anglers fishing on Thursday. He recorded 28 for 35 lb for 8 days. Darragh Touhy from Dublin took 15 for 20 lb in 5 days, best over 3 lb.

100 anglers landed 107 trout for 132 lb in 130 angling days, best just over 3 lb. The Western Regional Fisheries Board staff competition was held on Thursday when thunder and lightening conditions interrupted fishing. 33 anglers fished and they could only account for 19 trout, John Kelly having two for 3.5 lb to take first place. Paul Reynolds was second with a 2.5 lb trout and Trevor Stafford was third with a 2.2 lb fish.

Lough Carra
Anglers report very few trout moving to the surface of the lough this week, 19 rods having only 16 for 23 lb for 29 angling days. Wet fly was best with patterns such as sedge, olives and buzzer working well at times.11 anglers staying at the Roberts' guesthouse at Partry had 7 for 9 lb in 8 days and they released 20 others.

Galway Salmon Weir Fishery
Salmon runs have been very good in the past two weeks and during that time salmon angling is producing more than an average of 1 salmon per angler per day. 141 were caught for the week, Jim Stafford, Dave Lenihan, Wolfram Hoppe (Germany) having 4 each for a day. John McCarty from Galway Werner Meckle each landing the heaviest of the week @ 11.5 lb. Gus Murphy had two, 10 lb and 4 lb, and Tommy Murphy also had two, 8.5 lb and 8 lb.

Moher Lake
The lough fished well most days and anglers are having a lot of sport with the stocked and wild trout that seem to come freely when conditions are reasonably good. Ronnie Williamson from Scotland reported excellent fishing during his stay, as also did Pat Murphy from Tuam who says he experienced the best trout fishing ever on the lough. Noel Quirke from Westport also reported good fishing. Permits from Margaret and Michael McDonnell, Liscarney, Westport, telephone: 098 21638.

Lough Inagh Fishery
Two grilse were caught at the fishery in recent days, one of 6.5 lb by Nicolas Leroy and one of 4.75 lb by Colin Folan, the Fishery manager. Both fish were caught on a size 12 Silver Jungle fly. It is expected that with the heavy rain within the catchment in recent days that a lot more fish will run the rivers. Colin reports 13 sea trout caught on Lough Inagh, 10 of them averaging 1 lb to Mark Brefka from Canada who found the Claret Dabbler the best wet fly. Tony Bond from the UK had the others to a Peter Ross and a sunken line. Colin also says that sea trout are just starting to enter the fishery and hopefully the runs will improve with time.
