Cycle Safety Competition
Six teams from Scoil Naomh Aingeal took part in the Cycle Safety competition held in Westport on 6th May. Each team consisted of three girls from 5th class. The girls, along with the rest of their classmates, had been given the opportunity to partake in a three week cycling proficiency course in school prior to the competition. In the competition the competitors, accompanied by a Garda who was their judge, cycled a specially chosen route around the town. They were judged on different aspects of cycling safety including bike control, signaling, entering and exiting junctions, straight line cycling and overall safety. A theory test was given before the practical competition began. There was also a Bus Safety demonstration given by Bus Eireann. When all teams had taken part the participants set about to form the longest cycling train in Ireland as they cycled the route once more around Westport town.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thanks to Mayo County Council/Westport town Council and Mayo Garda Siochana who organised the event.
