International Day/Lá Idirnáisiúnta

Tuesday April 20th, 2010

On Tuesday April 20th 2010, our two fifth classes along with their múinteoirí, Ms Lynch and Ms Roche, assisted by our language support teachers, Ms Spelman and Ms Dunne organised a very enjoyable and successful International Day in Scoil Naomh Aingeal.

Twenty-seven nationalities are represented in our school. Pupils come from Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and the Middle East. To celebrate this the girls in fifth class hosted a special assembly with an intercultural theme. During this assembly the whole school celebrated the music, dancing, language, costumes, traditions and culture of the countries from which our friends and classmates come. Fifth Class also decorated the display boards with maps, flags, charts and photos for their classmates to enjoy and further their knowledge of the wider world.

As part of our International Day some girls dressed in the beautiful clothes they wear on special occasions e.g. when they celebrate weddings, birthdays and festivals. Fifth class also enjoyed tasting different sorts of food as many international children brought in some treats that are popular in their native country. Ms Lynch's class loved Anna's "Cuku Ausis" or "Pigs' Ears" from Latvia and also Haneen's "Konafa" which is a traditional Egyptian dessert. Our múinteoirí, in the staff room, were also treated to an Indian snack, made with potato and a special spicy dip.

We thoroughly enjoyed the celebration of cultures on International Day and it gave the whole school a unique and enthralling insight into other cultures and an opportunity to experience other colourful and exotic traditions. We felt it important to designate this a special day and hold these special celebrations for a variety of reasons:

  • to demonstrate the value we place on the many and varied cultures of our pupils
  • to provide a forum for cultural expression
  • to widen the horizons and awareness of all pupils and so encourage tolerance and understanding
  • and finally to enjoy diversity and have fun!!

The girls in fifth class wish to say a big "Go raibh míle maith agaibh" to all the girls who participated in their assembly and also to their teachers for organising this fun and fantastic event. A happy International Day was wished to all!!
