Discover Ireland Science

Today we attended a science show. It was based on weather and was very exciting and interesting. One of the first things that Declan showed us was an experiment based on atmospheric pressure. If you fill a plastic bottle to the very top with water, then put a ping pong ball on top and turn it upside down it won't fall off and the water won't come out. When you turn it the right way around again the ball will come straight off.

Another thing Declan showed us was that if you get two bottles, fill one of them with liquid, tape them together and then swirl them around it creates a little mini liquid tornado.

He also showed us an experiment to show how lightning is formed. He had this machine that you twist so fast flashes go from one metal stick to another. The next experiment he showed us was a bucket sealed with plastic and a strong elastic band at one end. If you pulled the plastic and then released it a shot of air flew out of the open end. He went around doing this into pupils' faces and also to the teachers, which was especially funny.

Declan told us very interesting facts like that above your head right now there is 400kg of air but the reason why it isn't so uncomfortable is we have gotten used to it since the day we were born.
I must say the science show was brilliant!
