Feast of Christ the King If
we think of Christ the King using ideas about the British monarchy or other actual kings and queens, it can
seem hard to make sense of this feast.
Today’s gospel tells us that the kingdom of Christ is not like
that. It is a kingdom that starts
inside each one of us. But
this kingdom of Christ isn’t just an internal thing. It must also be made a reality in our
lives as individuals, as a community, and as a society. Later
on in this Mass, we will hear a lot of words used to describe what this
kingdom is like. One of the words is
justice. That’s a challenge to all of
us in our present prosperity. Do we
see it as an opportunity to get as much as we can for ourselves, by using the
power of whatever group we may belong to, or do we look for a just
distribution of this new wealth to all sections of our society? The
call to justice is one that affects us all as followers of Christ. It is hard, because it is always hard to
overcome selfishness. But if this
feast today is to mean anything at all to us, it is a call we cannot ignore. |
