Almost €20,000 distributed to 40 Sports and Community groups by Mayo Sports Partnership

At a recent Mayo Sports Partnership Board meeting €19,000 was allocated to 39 clubs / organisations in Mayo through both the Partnerships 2015 special participation grant scheme. Special guest at a recent presentation evening, Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring, complimented the work being done on the ground by many volunteers and how it was important to recognise their contributions in whatever way possible.

" Volunteers are the lifeblood of sport in this country and oftentimes don't get enough recognition for their efforts. Schemes such as this through the Mayo Sports Partnership provides invaluable assistance to clubs and communities " Minister Ring stated.

The aim of the Sports Partnership is to increase participation in sport / physical activity and it is envisaged that all projects will help to do just that particularly in specific target groups of our population. This year the scheme has funded initiatives including the set up of a new cycling club in Islandeady, the new development of a rowing club in Ballycroy, ladies soccer in Greenway Utd Newport, community summer camps, participation programmes in camogie and table tennis, support for masters participation in basketball and GAA. Programmes in the travelling community and the Irish Wheelchair Association were also supported under the scheme.

"Over the last 10 years since Mayo Sports Partnership came into being this small grant scheme has benefitted many targeted initiatives across the county. Support through the Partnership and its dedicated team led by Sports Co-ordinator Charlie Lambert has led to significant increases in participation amongst all sectors. Through the assistance of the Irish Sports Council and Minister Ring we hope to continue this support into the future" Mayo Sports Partnership Chairman Brendan Mulroy added.

Mayo Sports Partnership comprises of representatives from local agencies, sports organisations and community representatives, is core funded by the Irish Sports Council and is hosted by Mayo County Council. For funding under the annual Special Participation Grant Scheme applicants need to show that the suggested project will increase participation and is sustainable.

Since 2005 the Partnership has brought an overall investment of close to €6.5 million to developing sport and recreation within the county. Many projects / initiatives involving pre-schools all the way up to older people have benefited from this significant input. Significant contributions, both financially and in kind, of partner agencies on the board such as Mayo County Council, Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB, HSE West, GMIT, Leader Companies, Udaras na Gaeltachta, Mayo Education Centre and other stakeholders has also been key to the successful development of the Partnership.
