Western Angling Report July 11th. 2001
by Danny Goldrick

Lough Corrib
There is very little happening regarding trout fishing on the lough, this being always regarded as a slack time of season for fly fishing. However there are quite a few salmon being caught particularly around the mouth of the Cong river where hundreds of salmon have been caught so far this season. One English angler and his son are reported as having 28 during their stay in the village of Cong, and another young boy of 14 is reported as having 14 for a day. Fishermen in other parents of the lough are also taking salmon to the troll, and a few big trout over 10 lb each were caught in recent times. There was also a report of a Headford angler landing a specimen trout of over 10 lb.

Lough Mask
A very interesting trout wet fly competition was held by the Ballinrobe District Anglers' Development Committee, covering various days over a 3-month period and adopting a "catch & release" approach throughout. This is the first time that anglers organised such a large "catch and release" competition anywhere on the Western Wild Brown Trout lakes and all credit must go to the Ballinrobe Club for their 2001 new approach to conserving stocks. 173 trout were caught over the various days with a total measurement of 5,714 centimetres. Ronan Cusack from nearby Cushlough landed 17 for 581 centimetres and Ballinrobe's Robbie O'Grady also had 17 fish. Over the past week anglers on the lough experienced some excellent fishing to wet fly. Mick Dunne and Donal Sweeney from Rochfordbridge and Dublin had 11 for 27 lb in two days, best 4.25 lb and 3.75 lb.

Two English anglers landed 14 for 22 lb in 4 days, using the dapped natural fly at times. Overall, prospects look very good for the World Cup Trout Wet Fly Championships which take place over a five-day period, the first heat starting on August 2nd with the final on August 6th.

Lough Carra
19 anglers over the past week landed 37 trout for 48 lb in 36 angling days, best 2.5 lb. 12 anglers at the Roberts' guesthouse at Partry landed 33 over 9 days, 30 of which were returned again to the water. There is a good movement of trout throughout the lough whenever fly-life is present to attract them to the surface. This includes some mayfly and sedge.

Galway Salmon Weir Fishery
45 salmon were caught between June 25 and July 9, mostly all grilse and 7 between 8 and 14.5 lb. The runs of salmon are tapering off after a very good month of June for grilse, most of them going all the way to the upper reaches of Lough Corrib and particularly to the Cong and Owenriff Rivers. John McGauran landed one of the heaviest salmon of the month at the Galway Fishery. It weighed 14.5 lb and was caught on a shrimp. Last week John Anderson from Moycullen had 3 for a day weighing 20 lb, all to fly, and Gary Kilroy had two for 12 lb.

Bunowen And Carrowniskey
Following heavy rain in the area the two rivers are in excellent conditions for salmon fishing, and have been for several days over the past week. However, while we don't have much information on the actual number of salmon caught we have an unconfirmed report that over 100 have been caught so far this season. For permits and licences contact Gaffney's Bar, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, telephone 098 66150, or the Fisheries Board office at Ballyhip, Louisburgh, telephone: 098 66404.

River Erriff:
It has been a good month at the fishery with 137 salmon caught between June 9 and 30th, most of the fishing taking place during the latter part of the month and whenever water levels were suitable. As early as the period between June 9 and 16th two Spanish anglers, A. Freine and A Rodrigues landed 10 fresh-run grilse during their week's visit. During the second week, there were three good spates resulting in 47 fish for the week. Towards the end of the month excellent water levels brought good results, the river producing 81 salmon, 35 of them on Saturday, June 30th when the water was receding following torrential rain in the catchment and a heavy flood. Fishing with fly on the Quarry and Dog Pool at Beat 2, Mr. G. Garnier from France landed 7 salmon for the day, and Mr. J. Keogh from Dublin had 5 on Beat 7. An 11.75 lb salmon was caught on Beat ` by Mr. J. Doyle, and 3 fish were taken on Beat 3 by Mr. L. Hardy from England. Mullingar anglers, Louis Vambeck, Christy Slator and Liam Gilsenan had 5 fish, best 10.5 lb by Mr. Slator who was visiting the fishery for the first time.

This fishery produces around 500-600 salmon per year. It has very comfortable accommodation at its Aashleigh Lodge, providing a high standard of cuisine and specialising in the best quality seafood. The lodge has recently undergone extensive renovations throughout bringing a whole new dimension of comfort to the house. Owing to the timely competition of the renovation programme there is currently availability for fishing at the river with accommodation at Aashleigh Lodge in August and September. This is an ideal opportunity for enthusiastic anglers to avail of fishing on this important fishery. Interested anglers should contact the manager of the fishery, Jim Stafford, Aashleigh Lodge, Leenane, Co. Galway, telephone: 095 42252, or E-mail: Erriff.fish@iol.ie

Seven salmon have been caught in the past two weeks, five since the last rainfall in the area, and sea and brown trout are improving since recent floods. Belgium angler Phillipe Lefebvre who fished at the Derryclare Butts caught a 10.25 lb salmon, and John Davis from the UK had one of 7 lb at Corloo as well as 5 sea trout. Basil Shields and Pete Kernilly had some nice fishing when catching and releasing a number of sea trout taken to mainly a Claret Bumble wet fly. Basil also had a 4.5 lb grilse to a Claret Bumble, and Joyce Seden from Roscommon took a nice 6lb grilse on Lough Inagh. Noel Greaney and Kieran Power from Galway also did well taking 7 sea trout for a day to the Bibio, Thunder & Lightening and various bumble patterns. Colin Folan, the fishery manager, says the river and Lough Inagh are providing exciting fishing and that the waters have lots of fish at the moment. Contact Colin at: 095 34706.
