Four young Castlebar men are to climb Kilimanjaro for cancer research. They are to climb Africa's highest mountain later this year in a bid to raise €50,000 for stem cell research. The four are Martin Moran, Westport Road, Paul Higgins, Rowan Drive, Brendan Coleman, Westport Road and Brian King, Straide.

They will make their climb of the 20,000 feet high snow capped Kilimanjaro on the borders of - Kenya and Tanzania next September. Their fund-raising projects was kicked by Mayo All Star footballer Alan Dillon in An Sportlann in Castlebar last week.

The money raised will go to the haematology Dept. in St. James's Hospital in Dublin which, for over 25 years, has been actively engaged in research into leukaemia and other related forms of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. A serious of fund-raising events have been planned and these will start with a cabaret, dance and disco in Hotel Newport on this Friday (Feb 23rd) with guests artists, Frank Forde, Medicine Bow, Brian Lennon and Friends, Mick Lavelle, Molloys Set Dancers.

The quartet all enjoyed outdoor activities and when the idea of a climb of the highest free-standing mountain in the world arose they decided that their adventure should be put to use by raising money for charity.
