Grandparents in Castlebar have organised a special Grandparents and Families Mass in the town in the run-up to Christmas.

The Mass on Sunday, December 6th, will be the first official activity of the newly-formed local branch of the Catholic Grandparents Association (CGA.)

“We are encouraging grandchildren and children to join in the celebration of Mass together. This will be the weekly 12.30pm Mass, and it will have a special emphasis on the family, with readings and Prayers of the Faithful by grandparents and grandchildren,” explained Angela Gormley, chairperson of the Castlebar branch of the CGA.

The Offertory Gifts will be brought to the altar by grandparents and grandchildren, and the Mass will be followed by Benediction.

“We are also asking young people to bring along drawings or pictures of their grandparents. These will be placed on the altar during the Mass,” added Mrs Gormley.

Our Lady’s Choir will perform at the Mass. The Catholic Grandparents Association was launched in Knock Shrine in September, at the third annual National Grandparents Pilgrimage.

Dr Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, is the patron, and the official launch of the Association was conducted by Cardinal Sean Brady, Primate of All-Ireland.

Final plans for the Castlebar Grandparents and Families Mass will be made at the next meeting of the Castlebar branch on Thursday, November 26th, in The Monastery at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

The Castlebar branch of the Catholic Grandparents Association was formed at a meeting in the Traveller’s Friend Hotel, Castlebar, on Tuesday night, October 27th.  Brid Keohane has been elected secretary of the branch.
