You will be dropped to the starting point of Rosroe for the Famine Track Walk along the shore of Killary Harbour Ireland's only fjord. The "Famine Track" was built after the Great Famine (1848) to provide some employment for the then extensive population of Connemara.

Our walk follows for the most part a famine relief road built in 1846 along the southern shore of Killary Harbour. You will walk on an old famine road that was built by the starving Irish peasants during the great famine 1845 - 1849. On the route you will clearly see the ruins of famine villages and lazy beds, the name given to the potato ridges where the starving peasant Irish tried to provide food for his family. The route offers stunning views of Killary harbour, Ireland's only fjord. We will pass through the deserted village of Foher, where we can view lazy beds up close.

We will follow this route also known as "The Green Road" for approx 4 miles. We will also see fish cages and mussel rafts which have been added in recent years to supplement the income of the local farmers. The route offers stunning views, which can only seen on foot, of the fabulous Killary Harbour as well as passing cascading waterfalls which descend under the track all set against the steep craggy backdrop of Maol Reidh and its gullies steeply descending into the fjord. We may even lucky enough to view dolphins or seals swimming in the sea beneath our track!

After passing a pier used to service the fish farming our route comes on to a tarred minor road which we will follow for a further two miles until we reach a disused quarry where we will once again be met by our bus.
