Parish of Castlebar Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar; St Aloysius's,
Breaffy; St. Patrick's, Ballyheane Sunday Newsletter 1st Sunday of
Advent 3rd December 2000 |
|
In
today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses issues that do not make for easy
hearing. The section actually contains
references to two separate events: the forthcoming destruction of the city of
Jerusalem, and the second coming of Jesus at the end of the world. At the beginning of Advent the Church is
preparing us for the celebration of the first coming of Jesus by reminding us
of the significance of his second coming.
These two major events in human history could not be more different -
the birth of Jesus occurred in obscurity, unnoticed by the world, whereas the
second coming will be heralded by cataclysmic events that will shake the
planet. It is as if we are being
reminded that as we ponder the birth of Jesus in the quiet vulnerability of
the stable, we should not lose sight of who he is, and the eternal purpose of
his mission to redeem humankind. ‘Lord, help me to deepen my relationship
with you by setting aside some peaceful time for prayer each day this
Advent. Teach me not to allow trivial
cares to rob me of the peace that you bring.’ |
