1. Mayo in Motion Month June 2013

Mayo Trails Partnership in association with Mayo Sports Partnership facilitates an annual initiative to promote walking and cycling as an enjoyable way towards a healthy and active lifestyle. In 2012 over 20 communities throughout the county participated in walks with 16 cycling events taking place during Bike Week. The initiative proved to be an outstanding success with people of all ages and abilities participating. Based on its success a calendar of events will be once again be co-ordinated to promote walking and cycling during the month of June. This year National Bike Week takes place from Saturday 15th to Sunday 23rd June.

2. Be Active After School Programme

After a successful first year The Be Active After School Activity Programme (ASAP) is being re-launched for another year. The Be Active ASAP is an exciting initiative that provides opportunities for children to engage in physical activities in a non competitive after school setting. The programme is led by teachers and supported by parents. The Be Active ASAP supports the PE curriculum. It is funded by the HSE and supported by the Irish Sports Council and St. Patricks College of Education in Drumcondra.The Be Active ASAP is designed for 7-8 year olds and is FREE to all participating schools. The programme includes a comprehensive resource folder, teacher handbook, teacher training, support and school visits.

It is recommended that schools wishing to achieve the Active School Flag should consider the Be Active ASAP as a means of securing the flag.To register your school for the programme contact Mayo Sports Partnership at 094-9047025

Mayo AC 5k Summer Series

Details have been just announced of the eagerly awaited 4th annual Mayo AC 5k Summer Series organised in association with Mayo Sports Partnership. This years series has been expanded to five races taking place on five Tuesday evenings at 8pm beginning in Castlebar on June 18th .

As in previous years the organisers are anxious to point out that this a "no frills" fun event its open to all but the emphasis is on those who wish to run jog or walk at their own pace in a fun sociable environment. all courses are AAI measured well stewarded and there will be a time clock on the finish line. Spot prizes will be drawn among those who participate each week.

4. Mayo Men on the Move

Men on the Move continues to grow through out the county. The programme is also supported by Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation and Midwest Radio.

The programme was originally set up in the Ballina, Westport and Claremorris areass and has now expanded with the programme now available in Kilmovee, Erris and Castlebar. Interest has also been shown from other counties with a view to setting up similar schemes in their localities.

Special Participation Grant Scheme 2013

Approximately 50 applications for funding under the above annual scheme were recently put in front of a meeting of the Mayo Sports Partnership board. Successful initiatives will be announced at a presentation event to take place on Monday 17th June in Ballyheane Community Centre. Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring will be special guest on the night. This year approximately €18,000 is allocated to the scheme with the assistance of proceeds from the Western People West of Ireland Womens Mini Marathon. 13 groups receive €4,000 for Bike Week Events 15th - 23rd June

National Bike Week was launched in 2009 to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy and fun mode of transport. Mayo Bike Week is an integral part of the overall National Bike Week initiative and is organised by a Bike Week Steering Committee incorporating Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo County Council, An Taisce, HSE West and Smart Travel Castlebar / Westport

This year the Partnership was able to distribute €4,000, through funding from the Department of Transport, for recreational Bike Week events which take place from the 15th - 23rd June. The showcase event this year "Bike Fest Castlebar" takes place on Sunday 23rd June 2.15pm - 4.30pm at Lough Lannagh Castlebar. Events will include Free Bicycle and Helmet Check, Family Treasure Hunt,Slow Bicycle and Obstacle Races, Bike Buddy and lookalikes on bikes. It promises to be a fun filled day out for all the family.

Westport Activity Ambassador Training Programme Commences

Six unemployed people are to benefit from a 9 month internship under the governments Jobbridge Scheme to become physical activity ambassadors in the Westport area. They have just commenced their 4 week training programme which will include Walking & Cycling Leadership, Soft outdoor adventure, Environmental awareness, Occupational first aid, Child protection, Disability awareness, Customer care, Social media.

The Activity Ambassador progamme has been developed by Westport Town Council in association with the Mayo Sports Partnership and Westport Tourism Organisation in an effort to increase participation in sport and recreation for both visitor and resident. They will actively engage with recreation providers in the creation of complimentary programmes and also with Westport Tourism Organisation, Westport Leisure Park and Accommodation providers. Activity Ambassadors will develop and promote a weekly activity list in association with local sporting, cultural & visitor attractions and also provide for delivery of activity programmes for specific groups/families.

9. Goal to Work Sports Coaching Initiative for Erris this Autumn

Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Company and Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Mayo County Development Board, Mayo Mental Health Association, Connacht Rugby (IRFU), the FAI, Mayo GAA, HSE , and the Department of Social Protection will deliver "Goal to Work" in the Erris area this Autumn.

"Goal to Work 1" trained 12 jobseekers to become fully qualified soccer coaches and referees with many of those gaining part time employment as a result. "Goal to Work 2" in Ballina built on the successful pilot initiative giving participants the opportunity to train at foundation level in Soccer, GAA and Rugby. "Goal to Work 3" extended to the Ballyhaunis area with participants gaining general activity leader training with target groups such as older people, people with a disability as well as the sports specific coach training programme. Each trainee coach delivered coaching in local primary schools in their area for work experience. Boccia league continues in Breaffy GAA pitch on the 10th June from 12-4pm
There has being a good turnout at events so far with teams travelling from Galway and Ballina as well as local clubs such as Parke and Turlough.

A children's Come and Try day for children with Spina Bifida or Hyhrocephalus will take place on Saturday 15th June at 11am in Breaffy GAA Club House.
