"Men on the Move" Exercise Programme featured on RTE

A unique exercise programme for men is taking Mayo by storm.... "Men on the Move" which recently featured on RTE news is a programme for men aged 30+ who want to get active and feel the associated health benefits.

Supported by Mayo Sports Partnership, HSE West and Mid West Radio Men on the Move commenced in Mayo in March 2012. Following an initial information night which included a free health check men engaged in a twice weekly exercise programme under the watchful eye of a qualified activity leader. Activities include walking, jogging, cycling and strengthening exercises. The leader supports the group and helps every man to start to get more active no matter how fit or unfit they feel. The ages of the men vary from 30 yrs to over 80 so there is a place for everyone in men on the move.

We all know of the many health benefits of taking more exercise: - these include stronger heart and lungs, having more energy, reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, better quality sleep, stronger bones, prevents chronic disease, weight loss, decreased stress & prolonged independence as we get older.

Despite knowing the benefits of physical activity sometimes it can be difficult to get started particularly if you do not feel fit or have not been active for a long time. Men on the Move can help you get started as you will not have to start on your own and the leader will make sure you start at a pace that suits you and you won't end up over doing it. People are much more likely to stick with an exercise programme if they have support and they go at their own pace.

So why not take advantage of the longer evenings and check out your local men on the move programme. All leaders are fully trained and welcome new members. For further information contact Mayo Sports Partnership at 094-9047025 or log on to www.mayosports.ie. You can also contact the local leaders of the projects.
