Please see details below of our Christmas programme taking place this December in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar. We hope you will get a chance to come along and visit us over the coming weeks.  And don't forget to visit the Museum Shop if you are looking for a special Christmas gift - we have a fantastic range of quality, Irish-made craft products to suit all budgets.

The Museum opening times over the Christmas period are:  

CLOSED:          Wednesday 24 December from 1pm (Christmas Eve) & Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day)  

OPEN:             Friday 26 December - Saturday 27 December: 10am - 5pm;   Sunday 28 December: 2-5pm        

CLOSED: Monday 29 December

OPEN: Tuesday 30 December - Saturday 03 January: 10am - 5pm; Sunday 04 January: 2-5pm.

Please note: the Museum Shop & Café will also be closed Friday 26 December and will reopen on Saturday 27 December '14. .

Our Christmases Past:  December programme at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

Get away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and come celebrate the festive season with a crafty range of family activities at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life. The programme includes a Christmas toy display and children's activity area as well as events ranging from making Christmas decorations and cards to carol singing and playing music. Remember it's all completely FREE!

Programme of events this December:

During December:

1 - 31 December: Display of Memories of Christmases past

A charming display of festive artefacts - from our archives.

Evoke memories of Christmases past with our toy-shop display of pre-loved toys.  Location: Level A.


3 - 31 December: Christmas Greetings Tree & Children's activity area

Relax beside this amazing tree which was designed by Mayo ArtSquad. Take in the festive atmosphere while your children colour and play with traditional games.


Christmas performances, workshops and drop-in activities

Friday 5th December: 11am-1pm

Drop-in Activity. Knitting Circle: Christmas Tree Bling!

Join the Museum's knitters to jazz up your Christmas tree with hand-crafted decorations. No booking required. Adults and children 7yrs+

Saturday 6th December: 3-4pm

Film. 'Déantús an Phoitín'

'Déantús an Phoitín' le Mac Dara Ó Curraidhin a stiúraigh, is a documentary which traces the history of illicit whiskey distillation in Ireland and shows how Poteen was traditionally made. Organised as part of the 'Preserving the Peace' exhibition. No

booking required. Adults and children 12+

Saturday 6th December: 3-5pm

Drop-in Activity. Christmas Programme: Music Circle

Join the music circle to practice, share and play traditional tunes and songs. No booking required. Family

Sunday 7th December: 2-4pm

Drop-in Activity. Christmas Programme: Festive Decorations

Jingle all the way to Christmas by making your own stars, bells and snowflake decorations. No booking required. Family.

Saturday 13th December: 11:30am-1pm.

Drop-in Activity. Mayo Genealogy Group

If you have an interest in finding out about your family history come along for free practical tips with the Mayo Genealogy Group. No booking required. New researchers welcome. Adults

Saturday 13th December: 2-4pm

Drop-in Activity. Christmas Programme: Cards

Design and make your own Christmas cards inspired by the designs on examples from the Museum's collections. No booking required. Family

Sunday 14th December: 2-5pm

Course.  Christmas Programme: Felt Wreath

Join textile artist and designer Susan Basler to make your own unique Christmas wreath for the festive season. Perfect for adding that extra special touch to your homes festive  flair. Booking required. Adults

Thursday 18th December: 3-4pm

Drop-in Activity. Christmas Programme: Carols

Get in the Christmas spirit, put on that Santa hat and join the Foxford National School Band for our annual Christmas carols sing-along. No booking required. Family

Friday 19th December: 11am-1pm
