GENEALOGY & COMMUNITY ARTS GALORE DURING CULTURE NIGHT 2012 AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND - COUNTRY LIFE

Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo

An exciting Culture Night programme awaits visitors to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life on Friday 21 September next. Following on from the success of last year's Culture Night event, the Museum of Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar is running 2 special events for the public to enjoy.


Research your ancestors at our Genealogy event, and enjoy the launch and tour of the hugely successful ONSIGHT Community arts programme which took place in the Museum grounds over the summer months. To enable visitors to take in as much of the programme as possible, the Museum Café will be open with a special Culture Night menu from 5pm.


Culture Night Programme of events at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life


Part 1:
6.00-7.30pm Drop in Event: Who Do You Think You Are? The Gathering
Join us for a genealogy 'Culture Night'. There will be talks on how to research for ancestors at home and abroad, with practical advice, handouts and hands-on help to research your family history.
Venue: Activity & Resource Rooms, Level C, Museum Galleries.
No booking required. Suitable for adults.

6pm Introduction by Stella Cafferty of Mayo Genealogy Group. Find out how about the Mayo Genealogy Group and hear their plans and aims for the future.

6.15pm Researching your ancestors at home (Ireland) with Dympna Joyce.

6.30pm Researching for your ancestors abroad with Dympna Joyce.

6.45pm Chat to members of the Mayo Genealogy Group for some practical advice, hand-outs and hands-on help on how to research your family history.

Part 2:
7.30-8.30pm LAUNCH OF THE ONSIGHT Community Arts Programme . Please convene in the Museum Café for this part of the Culture Night programme.

This section of the evening will have 3 elements:
01. Viewing of ONSIGHT Community Arts Exhibition

Featuring the artistic fruits of the ONSIGHT Art Workshops which took place from May until August in the Museum. These were free drop in events through which visitors actively participated in creating artworks. On display in the Café will be:
· Porcelain plates made by visitors with the ceramic artist Jodi Coyne http://jodicoyne.com/

· A large quantity of silk paintings made with the artist Brid Kivneen http://www.kivneendesigns.com/

· A large weaving frame created by Merovee Guerin. This colourful textile tapestry is a centre piece of the exhibition. Many visitors and Museum staff wove themselves into the weave to create this unique piece.

Venue: Museum Café.

02. Guided walking trail through the Museum grounds to see some of the work produced during the ONSIGHT Programme including:

· The results of Leaves an Impression- a workshop of sculpted leaves led by Barbara Trawinski with the assistance of Shane Gannon, Louisa Sloan and Lindsay McConnell

· The installation of windmills made for the enormously successful Turn the Breeze led by Urs Harttung with the assistance of Collette Howley, Katarzyna Zych, Louisa Sloan and Jim Mulroy.

· The Renew installation by Tom Meskell http://www.tommeskell.com/

Venue: Museum grounds.


03. Launch of Prayer Boats onto Turlough Lake. This boat was made by artist Tommy Casby and members of the public as part of the ONSIGHT Programme.


Prayer Boats by Tommy Casby is a creative response to the 1960s Raft made of Rush (F1962.124) which is on display in the Living in the Environment exhibition in the Museum Galleries.This traditional type of watercraft was used on parts of the River Suck in County Roscommon. It is water-worthy and Tommy plans to demonstrate this on Culture Night on Turlough lake.
Venue: Turlough Lake. Access through Level D, Museum Galleries with lakeside viewing of the launch of this beautiful boat.
