Participants Sought for
Traditional Music, Song and Dance Project
at the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life

Last year the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life held a seminar on the theme Museum's & Young People to mark International Museums Day. Transition Year students from local schools were invited to contribute and to tell museum staff what they wanted from their National Museum. The topic of music featured prominently. This was the birth of the Traditional Music, Song and Dance Project at the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life, which was developed by the Education & Outreach Department with local musician Emer Mayock.

The project allowed participants to explore aspects of percussion, music, song and dance through various media. It also enabling them to learn how to create and complete new music. Students had the rare opportunity to work with a team of well known traditional musicians, percussionist Brian Fleming, musician Emer Mayock, singer Seamie O Dowd and dancer Mary Beth-Taylor. A CD of the group's work was compiled on the final day by musician Dónal Siggins. The inaugural programme took place last March with 12 transition year students from 4 different schools taking part.

Due to its success, the course will be run again from the 5th - 9th November 2007.  This 5-day course is for transition year students with some musical background.  The deadline for applications is Friday 19th October.

The National Museum of Ireland-Country Life offers a wide range of tours, activities and programmes for Post-Primary Schools and other audiences. The Traditional Music, Song and Dance Project is one of the many programmes that is on offer to Transition Year students.

Programming from September to April for Primary & Post-Primary schools is now available in booklet form and also available on our website www.museum.ie <http://www.museum.ie>
