Irish Seed Savers Association (ISSA) Return To The Museum of Country Life

Continuing with its ongoing programme of free public events, the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life will welcome the Irish Seed Savers Association (ISSA) to Turlough Park, Castlebar on Sunday 16 October '05 from 2.30-5.00pm.

This is a welcome return to the Museum by the ISSA following its hugely successful visits to the Museum in 2004.  The Association works to conserve Ireland's very special and swiftly disappearing native fruit, grain and vegetable varieties and return them to the Irish people.

On Sunday 16 October '05, Kevin Dudley of the Irish Seed Savers Association will give a talk and demonstration on
"How to Create an Orchard". Join Kevin as he talks about creating an orchard. Hear about heritage varieties of apples and then taste the different types.  Suitable for ages 7+.  Admission is free, but booking is required.

What is the Irish Seed Savers Association?
Based in Scariff, Co. Clare, the Irish Seed Saver Association is a registered charity, which does valuable work to ensure that the fruits, grains and vegetables, bred in Ireland by our ancestors, do not become extinct.

Seed Savers have found that native bred varieties, which have adapted to our climate over generations, do really well - without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilisers. Our forebears had a lot of skill and knowledge that is in danger of being lost forever if we don't make a determined effort to grow and conserve the varieties they so painstakingly bred. There are approximately 100 vegetable, 50 potato and 40 grain seed varieties available from Seed Savers.
