Swimmers from Castlebar Swimming Club were in action at the Connacht Senior Schools Championships which were held in Tuam on Sunday 13th January last.
The Castlebar swimmers represented their respective schools in style and came away with 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in Individual events, 3 relay teams in silver medal position and many swimmers achieving the necessary qualifying times for the Irish Senior Schools Championships to be held in Cork on 8th and 9th February.

As so often in the past, the star of the show was Cian Holland, who took Gold in the Senior 100m Butterfly event and followed this with a silver in the Individual Medley.

Laura Keaveney was very impressive in the Junior 100m Butterfly as she took Gold in a “Nationals” qualifying time.
Dara Dever, just returned from injury, showed that he is right back in top form as he took Gold in the Senior 100m Breaststroke.
Joseph Moran was consistent as ever, taking Silver in the Senior 100m Backstroke, Silver in the 100m Butterfly and Silver in the 400m Freestyle event.

Laura English was in top form in the Intermediate section, as she took silver in the 100m Breaststroke, Bronze in the Individual Medley and Bronze in the 400m Freestyle event.

Other Bronze Medallists were:
Colm Garrick, in the Intermediate 100m Breaststroke, Colm was also a finalist in the 100m Backstroke.
Ciaran Garrick, in the 400m Freestyle, Ciaran was also 4th in the Senior 100m Breaststroke.
Michael Walls in the Intermediate Individual Medley, Michael was also a finalist in the Butterfly event and 5th in the 400m Freestyle.

Other finalists were:
Sarah Wiseman, who came 4th in the Junior 100m Butterfly and 5th in the 400m Freestyle.
Jimmy Wiseman, 4th in the Senior 100m Butterfly, 5th in the 100m Breaststroke and 4th in the 400m Freestyle.
Jill Magee, 4th in the Intermediate 100m Backstroke.
Niamh O’Malley, 5th in the Intermediate 100m Backstroke.
In the Relay events:
St. Gerald’s team of:
Cian Holland, Jimmy Wiseman, Ciaran and Colm Garrick were in sparkling form as they took silver in both Freestyle and Medley Team events.
The Girls team from St. Joseph’s including:
Laura English, Jill Magee, Avril Egan and Sarah Wiseman were equally impressive as they took Silver in the Freestyle and came 4th in the Medley Team event.
These swimmers now go forward to represent their respective schools in the Irish Schools Championships in Cork and no doubt they will do so in style.

Joseph Moran took the Bronze in the Senior 1,500m Freestyle and came 5th in the 400m Freestyle.
Shenagh O’Byrne came 4th in the Junior 800m Freestyle in a personal best time.
Laura English produced personal best times in the 400m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle events.

Many thanks to all who helped with the Flag Day on Saturday 26th January and Church Gate Collection on Sunday 27th January, to Mary Caulfield and her Parents Committee for organising 2 very successful days and particularly to all who contributed so generously.
