Longford gains for Castlebar swimmers
Castlebar swimmers performed well at a full day of competition in Longford recently - with half the day devoted to a Connacht Regional B&C Gala and the other half taken up with a Connacht 400m gala. In the B&C gala, Kianna Higgins took silver and 11.42 seconds off her previous personal best with a new time of 1:42.26 in the 100m breaststroke. There was silver too for Aoife Donohue in the 100m freestyle with an excellent time of 1:22.26. Nathan Rennick took gold and a Division 2 time in the 100m fly, with a super time of 1:23.17. James English took a whopping 19.98 seconds off his previous personal best in the 100m breaststroke to take silver with a time of 1:45.83.
There were more PBs for Kianna Higgins, Louise Mangan and Ronan Dervan in the 100m backstroke, for Heather Fadden and Hannah Grady in the 50m fly. Clodagh Healy took 11.17 off her previous time to gain a new PB of 1:49.55 in the 100m breaststroke, and Ronan Dervan beat his previous time in the 100m freestyle by over 24 seconds to gain a new PB of 1:25.84.
Also setting new personal best records for themselves on the day were Johanna McDonagh, Sheena Morris and Meagan Deely (in the 100m breast stroke) and Michael Fahy and Ciaran Mylett (100m freestyle). Also swimming for Castlebar were Sarah Burke, Fiona Conway and Hazel Coen.
Swimming in the 400m gala, Mark Dervan and Conor Melly both achieved their Division 1 times in freestyle with personal bests of 5:09.38 and 5:12.02 respectively. Niamh Breslin took gold and a Division 2 time in the freestyle, with a time of 5:50.33, while Nathan Rennick got his second Division 2 time of the day - also in freestyle - with a time of 5:41.97. There were fine performances also from Caoimhe Hennigan, with a time of 5:59.88 in the IM, and Aoibheann Hennigan (5:23.80 in the freestyle - a 14-second personal best).
