Success for Castlebar Swimming Club at National Community Games Finals At the National Community Games swimming finals, which were held at Mosney last weekend, there was great success for the Castlebar Swimming Club. A total of two silver, three bronze medals and three 4th place certificates were won by the club swimmers. In all, a total of 14 swimmers from the Castlebar club qualified for the finals which was a record in itself. Annie McCormack, swimming in the U.10 Freestyle event produced a very fine swim against her rivals from Wexford, Longford and Kilkenny, to take the silver medal. Also, taking a silver medal was Shenagh O’Byrne, who had tough competition from Roscommon, Wexford and Kilkenny, before scooping the silver medal in the U.12 Freestyle event. Sally Cunniffe, competing in the U.10 Backstroke, out of her age group, swam extremely well before taking the bronze medal. Another swimmer out of his age group who took a bronze medal was James Sweeney, in the U.12 Breaststroke event. Darragh Quinn, competing in the U.16 Butterfly, swam a very competitive race to take another bronze medal for the club. Nicholas Quinn, in the U.10 Backstroke swam well in his event, where he took 4th place and a certificate. Also taking 4th place was Edward O’Byrne in the U.10 Freestyle event. Semi-finalists from Castlebar Swimming Club were: Eleanor Grier-Gavin, U.14 Breaststroke and Sarah Wiseman in the U.16 Butterfly. Other swimmers who took part from Castlebar in the swimming events were: Laura Keaveney U.14 Freestyle, Zoe Davis U.14 Backstroke and Avril Egan U.16 Freestyle. Yes, it was a great weekend in Mosney for the Castlebar Swimming Club and all the swimmers and their coaches must be congratulated on bringing great pride to the club.
