Feast of the Holy Family

‘Happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.’   The novelist Tolstoy’s opinion may well be right, but those who are suffering family tension, breakdown or misunderstanding need to be reminded that they are not isolated, that such experiences were not absent from the life of the family of Nazareth.

In a society where the community and clan reared the young, it was not unusual that a day had elapsed before Jesus’ absence was noted.  The parents of Jesus ‘were overcome’ when they saw him in the Temple.  They had to try to cope with the fact that ‘they did not understand what he meant.’  The Holy Family were also wholly human in their experiences in life.

For some, family life has been disappointing, upsetting or sour, as marriages and families exist in an increasing complex world.  We need to recall ‘the love that the Father has lavished on us’ (Second Reading).  Changes in patterns of behaviour come first from the experience of God’s love.

A year ends: recall all who search and seek persistently for peace and inner contentment, that they may find Him.  A New Year beckons: pray that we may ‘increase in wisdom, in stature and in favour with God and all’ (Gospel).
