Baptism of the Lord

If a person who never attended Church asked us what takes place there each week, we could reply that each year the Church presents 52 unique Sunday worship experiences, centred around the birth, life, death and Resurrection of Jesus.

The worship is composed of scripture readings; a homily to apply the readings to everyday life; the re-enactment of the Last Supper; other prayers and songs.

We concentrated on the birth of Jesus during Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.  This phase has now been completed.  Yesterday (Epiphany) we honoured Jesus as a small child visited by the Wise Men. This Sunday He is a 30 year old man beginning His public life.

In just a few weeks Lent will begin - the 40 days’ penitential season culminating in Holy Week, when we commemorate Jesus’ passion and death.  Then will follow the highlight of the entire year - Easter, celebrating the Resurrection.  Throughout the remainder of the year, we will marvel at Jesus’ miracles and praise Him for His teachings and promises.

In today’s liturgy, Jesus begins His public life by being baptised in the Jordan.  John the Baptiser hesitantly performs the ceremony.  Normally his voice is loud and bold, but today he’s nervous as the Messiah steps into the water.  Jesus didn’t need Baptism but He wanted it.  We need it and should want it.

St. Patrick’s Monastery

St. Patrick’s Monastery recently vacated by the De La Salle Brothers belongs to the Parish.  It was built in 1888 by the then Parish Priest Canon Lyons, as a home for the Brothers who were teaching in the Boys N.S., now the Family Centre.  It is a building of great character, and is now a listed building.

A section of the roof needs urgent attention and all the windows need to be replaced.  Some work needs to be done on the external walls as well and on one of the chimneys.   The interior needs major refurbishment including all mechanical and electrical services.  We are hoping when this work is finished, that it will be a residence for the Hospital Chaplains and for the G.M.I.T. Chaplain.  As it is a listed building all works must be carried out in accordance with regulations for such buildings.  The cost of all this work will be very substantial as it is an old building, but the sale of the parish house in Knockaphunta where the chaplains live, will help defray some of the costs.  As yet we have no final figure of the overall cost.  We will keep you informed of progress as it takes place.
