Wedding at Cana ‘This was the first of the signs given by
Jesus. It was given at Cana in
Galilee. He let his glory be seen and
his disciples believed in Him.’ This
wonderful account of Jesus’ first miracle is given in John’s Gospel. It strikes a very human chord. The wedding (Jewish weddings then lasted
several days) the embarrassment of the couple and their families when the
wine ran out, Mary intervening as a mother would and Jesus working this great
sign. It revealed His glory and
strengthened the faith of the disciples. Jesus’ negative answer to Mary underlines
the point that he cannot be bond by family relationships, but only by His
father’s will. Mary’s final words ‘do
whatever he tells you’ recognises the supreme authority of Jesus and what he
must do himself. This incident has
often been used by spiritual writers to express the role of Mary to God and
in the Church. We rejoice in the
presence of our Saviour with us and His blessed mother. ‘Tá Dia láidir agus tá mathair mhaith aige’,
as the old Irish saying has it. ‘God is strong and he has a good mother’. |
