Christian
Unity Week - 18th January to 25th January In
1908 a man named Paul Watson (an episcopal minister in America who later
became a Catholic priest and founded the Friars of the Atonement) proposed
the holding of an Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity from the 18th
January (formerly a feast of St. Peter) to the feast of the Conversion of St.
Paul on 25th January. His
idea drew on earlier moves in Scotland, by the first Lambeth Conference of
Anglican bishops and on the encouragement of Pope Leo XIII. The movement was given momentum by the
Abbè Paul Couturier of France who in 1935 advocated the ‘Universal Week of
Prayer for Christian Unity.’ In 1966
the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the
Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity began official joint preparation of
the Week of Prayer text. This year’s theme The
theme for the 2001 Week of Prayer is ‘Pilgrims together with Christ as the Way’ and
stems from John 16:6 - ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’. The inter-church group from Romania who
drafted the initial text wished to concentrate on the theme of ‘the way’ by
pointing out that to reach our destination we have to pay attention to the
journey. As pilgrims we are not alone
on this path because Christ, who is the way, is our companion and guide.
