paint, an exhibition for young audiences by artist Lucy Hill
4th October – 9th November 2013, Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co Mayo
Artist Lucy Hill has created something really exciting and different for the Linenhall Arts Centre’s annual visual art exhibition for young audiences. paint is an interactive, participatory, multimedia, multi-sensory exhibition of abstract painting. In short, an exhibition you can play with!
The exhibition features sixteen abstract oil paintings. The paintings are accompanied by time lapse films of the works being created. These films can be viewed on interactive screens in the gallery, and via smart phone on the exhibition website www.paintshow.ie. Alongside the paintings are a number of interactive elements including light boxes, viewmaster toys, perfume bottles, and "death jars", designed to enable visitors to explore in a hands-on way elements of Lucy Hill’s visual language, her visual stimuli and her studio surrounds.
Through exposing her working methods alongside the paintings, the artist aims to reveal the process of making art as one that involves messiness, pleasure, fun, persistence, procrastination, despair, frustration, joy, curiosity and obsession. paint is a show about process as much as product. It shows that it is by actively engaging in the creative process over time with sufficient space and materials, and by making countless decisions, mistakes and amendments, that art works are created.
Lucy Hill has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Paul Kane Gallery, Mermaid Arts Centre and Áras Inis Gluaire. In parallel to her own visual art practice, she has worked for many years in the area of visual art for early years, developing visual art workshops and experiences for children aged two years and upwards. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, and public art commissions.
paint opened at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, on Friday October 4th and will continue to November 9th 2013. It was one of the highlights of the Linenhall's RoolaBoola Children's Arts Festival which took place over the October bank holiday weekend. With an array of opportunities to interact with the works, through looking, smelling, listening, drawing and playing with materials, this is an exhibition you and your children will want to return to.
